As a life long Longhorn fan and NOT an alumni, this is my perspective of what just happened.

All of this is from what I learned from this sight and my brain putting together the theory.

Steve Patterson was hired as the AD for Texas with a purpose in mind from some BMD's. He is known for being able to clean house, and some thought there were "a few" BMD's who needed to be knocked down a peg or two. Apparently the egos (The few BMD's) were running the show. These were the guys who approached Saban a year ago without alerting anyone first. Knowing that Patterson knew Sexton helped get these individuals on board. If Patterson was to get anything done he needed these people on board with his condition for taking the job. He promised to go after Saban first with the condition that the ultimate choice was his if Saban said no. The egos signed off. But of course the egos just couldn't keep their hands out of it.

Patterson did go after Saban knowing that the chances were pretty slim of it happening. He also wasn't completely sold on Fisher and Harbaugh having interest but kept their names there and did inquire about it.

Patterson was a known Strong fan, but was having issues selling him to the egos. (They still thought Saban, Fisher or Harbaugh was a reality)

Patterson planned on keeping the egos dream alive through the monday night game at least while weighing all the options. He had interest in talking to Briles, Mora, Strong, and Franklin etc...... Briles and Mora wanted assurances which he could not promise. So they bowed out quickly. Strong interviewed and blew his socks off. Promised to put together the best staff and recruit in the areas where he could get kids with a toughness and edge. But he also promised he could hold these kids accountable and expect more from them.

When you have the egos trying to run the show, you can't get your guy to be signed off on.

Then Penn State was rumored to have hired Al Golden. That meant the Miami job was opening up and Strong would be a great candidate for it. Patterson wasn't going to get into a bidding war for a guy that the egos weren't sold on. So he pulled the trigger on Charlie Strong and let the egos know that Saban and Fisher were not interested. (Something I believe he may have known for awhile.)

This has ticked off the egos, but they are stuck accepting it because it was the original deal. Patterson has put his neck on the line with Strong. But if Strong is a success, it will take the power away from the egos. The rest of BMD's were not happy that the egos were weilding so much power.

As a fan and not an alumni, I love this. It reminds me of politicians. You hire people to do a job and they should weild the power. Not outside influences. Certainly not a few billionaires who want to rub it in with business partners who are Sooners or Aggies.

I say, Good Luck Coach Strong and Steve Patterson. If true, he may just be a genius. Hook'em

Certainly something along the lines you have outlined probably happened.

Sounds about the way it was to me. Ready to support Strong and his great staff I hope he puts together! Sound to me like he wants to leave Louisville in the best way he can by talking to all in person. Too bad all this got leaked last night by some.

Hook Em Horns!

Sexton was a driving force behind keeping the rumors pumping too. He is good for his clients financially but sounds like he is a slimy human being.

I now think Saban was never in play.
Saban was never coming. Not at any time. This whole thing was about Nick squeezing more money out of Alabama, and it worked like a charm.

Oh he was in play all right. In some people minds. It appears to me these BMD's really believed he was coming. It also appears to me that Sexton played those BMD's like a fiddle. Lets look at the facts. If Saban wanted to be here he would be here. It's really that simple.

Agreed, he may have given it some thought, but he never really was going to come. BMDs were played. I think Patterson knew all along that Saban was not coming. He just needed to keep the egos in check so he could do what was best. He couldn't look like wasn't at least trying to get Saban.

I like your ideas. I certainly don't understand the position that the BMDs were going to choose the coach. Mcphaul posted here that different factions wanted different coaches. For a BMD to throw a tantrum and say I'm pulling my money because I didn't get my way is akin to Mack trying to extort us on the way out. Neither is bigger than the program. Patterson was brought in to change the culture and he is doing that. Sometimes when you go through a transformation their is a level of pain and discomfort before progress is realized. This is what the BMDs are going through now IMO. Hire a guy and trust him to do his job. The days of BMDs having lockers in the locker room with players is probably over. It's time to understand what a culture change really means.

jmmore, you are a lifelong Texas fan so i dont consider you an outside perspective. Good post.

I think head to head Strong is better than Briles, Mora, Franklin(though all are very good coaches). I feel Briles has a advantage bc of his Texas ties but after some good assistants and a year and a win on the field, that will change.

don't think miami had anything to do with it they do not have the money to even match what lou was paying

I get your point, but Miami is in Florida and that is where Strong is from. I don't think Patterson wanted to give any reason for Strong to hesitate. Delaying any longer and Strong might have started to rethink how much power Patterson had. A coach probably doesn't want to think he has lame duck AD.
