RINGING THE CARILLON
By: Kylie Hopkins
The student body let out a collective sigh of relief on Saturday…finally, a win. A win that our team should be proud of – certainly there were some holes in our play, especially offensively, but the students got a chance to hope.
Post-game, the Kansas head coach was fired. Though Charlie Weis finished last season with a 3-9 record and wasn’t fired, one thing was weighing on my mind: why was he fired after losing to Texas? Why was Texas the last straw for Kansas’ football program?
The idea that losing to the “once-great†Texas football team can result in the firing of a head coach is problematic to me. It leaves me questioning what would’ve happened if Kansas had played a different team last weekend and lost. If Kansas had lost to Iowa State, would Weis still have been replaced?
Texas football isn’t getting much slack from the competition this season. Under the name “Longhorn football,†we’re expected to be great. Even in our building years, even with a brand new coach and a brand new regime, we are still expected to rise above our competitors. This bothers me.
The boys on our football team don’t deserve to be looked at like a disappointment. Coach Strong deserves a chance to prove that his coaching style works. We’re not seemingly being given the benefit of the doubt for our first season under a new coach since 1998.
Texas football may not be ranked in the top 25 or have a perfect record, but we have accomplished so much since the beginning of our season. Coach Strong has weeded out problematic players and allowed for every member of the team to have their chance to prove themselves. Witness Dylan Haines, who might not have gotten the opportunity to play for a different team without Coach Strong and his coaching staff believing that he had the potential to be a scholarship player.
As a reminder, the players that are on this team weren’t selected by Coach Strong. He arrived in Austin to an established roster with only eight months to get to know players and their abilities. I’d love to see if other coaches could make as much of an impact as Strong has, given the same circumstances.
Coach Strong’s meeting with Roger Goodell definitely shook the boat this week. It makes me proud (and a little sad) that the NFL commissioner took to coordinating with a college football coach about proper discipline.
The game against Baylor will be huge for the Longhorns. We are the underdog by a long shot, but I believe that we can hang on and prove ourselves adequate to play with the “big dogs,†even in Strong’s first season.
This weekend, I’ll be supporting our team from New Orleans. Hopefully, the game won’t cause me to purchase too many hurricanes.
