The Quarterback Problem

Anyone that thinks they can derive how good Swoopes can be from the extremely limited action he saw this year are fooling themselves.

1. The guys was at a 2A school last year, he really needed a red shirt as his skills are raw.

2. He was hurt in summer and through out the pre-season workouts which set him back even further.

3. Our previous coaching staff had a bit to be desired in preparing young QB.

4. That deep throw in the Alamo Bowl that was almost perfect shows me more than the hand offs he had been doing 99% of the time.

So please explain how you can write him off at this point.

As for Ash, I think he a good QB, not great, but good. Everything I have heard from those that do know is that he is really good shape in regards to the head and should be good to go. At worst case we need them to help with the young QBs, but I would not write him off.

Now saying all of that, I am all for grabbing a quality QB through transfer from juco or graduate. More competition is good and nothing with Ash, Swoopes, or even Heard is guaranteed.

No redshirt for Heard here. To me, I like the idea of a Swooped-Heard two headed QB monster.

Auburn seemed to do just fine this year with a quarterback who did not report until the start of summer (Nick Marshall) and a beast at RB (Tre Mason). I'm not saying Bergeron or Brown are Tre Mason, but they are not that far off. The most important thing for our offense is not the QB, but the OL. If Wickline is the OL coach everyone says he is, then he can take what has been the weakest part of the offense and mold it into a strength. It won't matter if it's Ash, Swoopes or Heard taking the snaps if our O-Line shows dramatic improvement under Wickline.

It would be nuts to rely on Ash as the QB in 2014. The UT and his parents care about Ash, he will never see the field at UT again. Even if he plays, he is one hit away from being out from the year and that will certainly limit his ability to run the ball.
Swoopes' 1 for 6 in the bowl game was not encouraging. He has shown no signs of being a passing or running threat in 2014. How can he possibly be relied on? What happens if Swoopes gets hurt?

Heard shows a lot of potential but he is missing the spring. What happens if he gets hurt?

There have been no signs so far of JC or transfer possibilities at QB.

UT is facing an epic disaster in 2014 without an answer at QB. Is anyone hearing anything about a solution???
He did throw a beautiful 45 yard bomb to mike davis that him in both hands but mike dropped it

There are about a dozen QBs in the Mack Brown era who never progressed and Swoopes has shown NO signs of progression. Anyone who follows football understands that a concussion quickly followed by a major relapse that kept Ash out for the rest of the season and the potential long term consequences of any further recurrence is cause for any responsible parent to be very concerned and for UT to not rely on him for 2014. It will be great if he can make it back but irresponsible to rely on him.
You may not have noticed that any quality transfer or JC QBs will be in big demand. Waiting until the summer would be folly.
I don't think Swoopes has been given any where close to the reps required to determine if he has progressed or not. Not even close. And that was evaluation as a true freshman. Hell VY got bench in his second year.

I am not a doctor, but I'd bet a nickel Ash won't play.

You simply cannot rely on a true fresh QB to come in a make a statement coming in the fall. It just doesn't happen.

We possibly have a problem.

I think it is silly/immature to argue that a guy has not shown progress when he has only been here for a year. didn't play until October/November? (might be wrong on that) quite early on a "progression." Mike Davis dropped a pass that could've been a touchdown or 2 out of those 6 passes he threw in the bowl game. Does anybody have a count on how many passes he's even attempted this year?

We are forgetting about one major factor, player development. I agree that Ash is not the answer yet he may be our best chance to start the season depending on what happens during spring and fall ball. I would fully expect Swoopes to get a TON of work in preparation of taking over the starting gig. I expect the current staff to rely on Ash to start the season but we will see Swoopes early and often. I think he starts against Kansas.

I think what the qb situation looks like in the fall will show us what Shawn Watson is made of. He did a pretty good job with the last qb he worked with. I hope he can do the same magic with this group, plus possibly another.

I'm not sure you can fairly judge a coach based on one fall given the hand he's dealt.

QB will be a dramatic improvement next year. Doesn't matter who gets the job, they will be a threat that will not allow defenses to play 8-9 in the box.

Realistically Case was a DivII QB. Read Scipio's articles on BC about the Case Rules.
