The New Tempo Offense In Numbers

I rewatched the entire 1st half mainly focusing on the tempo of the offense because I read that we ran 110 plays and I couldn't believe it.

I counted set up in-between plays, play length, which team was in (Team Texas = 1st. Team Longhorns = 2nd), which QB was in, and a few notes for the play for offensively plays exclusively (no Special Teams).

These were the results:

Both Texas teams ran a combined 113 plays in the 1st half (55 in the Q1. 58 in the Q2) of a Spring Game in the rain. 108 if you don't count 4th downs. They averaged <18 seconds of set up in between plays. The fastest the set up a play was 10.33 seconds and the longest the took was 41.15 seconds (it was on a 4th down, so they were deciding between kicking and going for it. Buechele threw a TD on that play).

There were 8 3-and-outs on 22 drives, so that leaves you with a 36% 3-and-out rate. Not good

I am going to go back and watch last years game tomorrow to see what the pace of play was last year vs this year.

Until then, enjoy these tables. If you would like to see the raw data I took click this link

Did the 3 and outs depend on QB?

I'm pretty excited about what Shane brings to the table.

Hook 'em!

The UT offense finally looks like it is being run by a OC who actually knows how to run up tempo and not by someone who just wants to run more plays/minute.  Its a breath of fresh air and the short sample size should really worry the other schools in the state as NOW UT will be able to stand toe to toe in recruiting battles for any skilled position player.  I couldn't have been more pleased with what I saw in the spring game.  Don't care about the mistakes and penalties right now as the staff has plenty of time to work that out.
