The NCAA should not give Penn St the death penality

It sets a terrible precedent. What would be the next step, suspending a program because someone in the athletic department embezzled money? It's a slippery slope and the idea is being advance by people who hate sports and are using these children as a reason for their agenda.

I think the right thing to do is for Penn State to suspend their football program for one season and allow any player wanting out, to transfer. That transfers should be allowed without the normal one year waiting period, if they transferred out of the conference. It would also show PS is serious about this situation and really wants to make amends.

Besides the self imposed suspension they should also pay the money. Settle with these people who were abused and get it behind them.

I just think the NCAA has way too much power as it is and I don't want to give them any more.

I don't think the NCAA has the balls to give any team the death penalty and I doubt they ever will. The problem is there needs to be a punishment severe enough to match the infractions. What is that? Sitting out a season? Taking away a bunch of scholarships? Kicking them out of the Big 10? I'm not sure any of those things are harsh enough or would do any good. Those families need to pursue the shit out of the Penn State in court and ruin them financially. I could give a care less about them or Big 10 football. I still hate Penn State for thrashing us in the Fiesta Bowl back in 1997.

Yes, I despise a lot of football programs. Basically everyone that doesn't wear burnt orange.

I understand the anger but with it must come a bit of a reality check. The PS program is not going to shut down and they will pay. My guess is in the $100 range.

but..I also am not naive enough to think this couldn't have happened anywhere.

1. No crime short of murder compares to this.

2. It has been well established the NCAA does have legal grounds to act, and this does meet the standard for lack of institutional control

3. This is not "giving" the NCAA anything. This is asking them to actually use their power for once.

Developments at Miami have really forced the NCAAs hand on this.

We will see if they (NCAA) have the balls to act appropriately. They only bitch slap schools and it does no good.

Why stop there? Throw em all in jail and burn down the f##king university?

I think they should make them wear Maryland uniforms for 10 years.

Anyone who aided in the cover up of the destruction of innocent lives in order to preserve PS's reputation should go to jail. They violated the law and, as far as I'm concerned and under many state's laws, are just as guilty as Sandusky. Throw them in jail where they belong.

Burning down the university is vigilante justice and has no place in society.

If the NCAA fails to act, keeping in mind that no punishment could ever be enough to satisfy justice, then why would any university listen to them or cooperate with them again? Is making an improper phone call a worse offense? Is getting some speeding tickets dismissed for your starting QB so severe that it dwarfs PS's complete lack of moral and ethical behavior and obligation?

Have we, as a society, decided that a game is more important that protecting children from a monster?

This is a precedence that will be felt for generations to come, and will become a catalyst in determining the NCAA's viability as a governing body in the future.

Great counterpoint. Ill take that as evidence you cant support your argument.

Great post Nash.

Emmert will be coming down on Penn State tomorrow at 9:00 am. CBS reporting these will be unprecedented sanctions. Speculation the punishments could include reduction in 50% of scholarships, fines and bowl ban for 3+ years. Is it enough? ABsolutely not, but let's get the details tomorrow.

Not my best post..maybe my worst?

I just wasn't well read enough on the subject and how far the parties in power went to cover up and allow this monster to continue his evil. My wrong was one not getting my facts straight before I wrote this misguided post. The second was thinking of Joe Pa as more of a Darrell Royal type figure.

Clearly that was not the case in either instance.

I am hearing that the scholarship reductions will be in upwards to 40+ over a 3-4 year period, 3 year bowl ban and a 2 year TV ban. All current players plus incoming freshman will be released unconditionally.

I am also hearing that PSU will not appeal decision, they have been working closely with the NCAA on this. There is speculation that PSU may self-impose the death penalty to help reduce the NCAA sanctions.

I have heard similar sanctions will be imposed. We have to remember this is criminal in nature and the law enforcement officials will take appropriate action. There are administrators at PSU that will probably do jail time. Crippling the program financially and from a scholarship/post season standpoint at an immense level is probably the most that can be done to them.
