The NCAA is worthless

The question I've always wondered when I see stories like this is to what extent is Texas willing to cheat to remain competitiive in football?  I mean, if there is no penalty for cheating, is it really cheating?  And why wouldn't UT cheat if there is no penalty - and tremendous competitive and financial upside?  We're not operating in the old SWC days when schools were subject to getting the death penalty.  These days, anything goes as long as it "improves the brand" (read: makes the universities more money).

Here's an article that you'll enjoy if you haven't read it already.  Key is to only use cash and purchase used cars.  Maybe this explains how Red McCombs became a big-time booster?

Nah.....I don't wanna believe that about my University.   ;)

JB why would You want to suggest Red and Texas are cheating? To say that crap even with a wink is chicken shit in my book. I have zero doubt that Bama is cheating. It is in their DNA. Whether Texas is cheating is a whole another question.

Reality is the NCAA doesn't want to catch anyone, particularly not high-profile teams like Bama.  Why kill the golden goose?  Only the brazenly stupid get caught and hit with sanctions.  ex: aggie

The ohio state and USC might argue with you. but the process seems very arbitrary and inconsistent.

Based on unsubstantiated innuendo, (Rachel McCoy's radio gaffe, for example)

UT is either:

A. Clean as a whistle

B. Smart enough to cover our tracks

My guess is it's somewhere in between.  Just being a realist - I wanna believe we're pure as ivory snow.  Sorry if you think my post is "chickenshit", but I'm a non-conformist.

i was referring more to the 'high-profile' statement.
I hear you, but let's look at both cases.

  • USC purchased a house for Reggie Bush's family for crissakes!  Probably easy to cross-reference his parents' W-2s and bank statements.  How can they afford this house on that salary?
  • tOSU was more difficult to nail down, but multiple Buckeyes players bartering their tOSU swag for tattoos?  Maybe the shop owner starts selling it, word gets around, bazing...even the NCAA figures it out.
The key to staying clean is cash transactions and players keeping their mouths shut.

Don't forget the OU kids that "worked" at a car dealership for "pay" back in the Bomar days. Also the Auburn QB was allowed to play the year Auburn won the MNC after the money was filtered through his Dad's Church. NCAA did very little back then as well. No I doubt Texas is pure as the driven snow, but I don't think we are buying players with cars. If we are we are doing a poor ass job of it since not a single Texas player was drafted.

So you think Red McCombs became a big time booster by providing used cars to UT athletes ??
ok...what else could it have been? endowment for the business school, softball stadium, naming rights for the DKR redzone...nah. must have been a couple of used cars.

Just playing devil's advocate.

But it's not out of the realm of possibility.  My comment was meant to be tongue in cheek.  Didn't mean to rub you or anyone else the wrong way.

Read the article about "bagmen".

If Red were providing used cars, the HC - and everyone outside a close circle - would be the last to know.
