Does the burden of the LHN make this job less intriguing to possible candidates? I see men who actually coach their teams and Mack has been more like a CEO than a coach. I wonder if Patterson can change the demands of LHN on our head coaches... Just a thought that I keep wondering about...

...with the money that texas plays with.... nothing is a "burden" in austin...

How much does a coach actually have to do on the LHN? Mack had a running segment during the season but I'm guessing someone tells him what to say. Other than that, it's mostly just the press conferences. Maybe having to deal with setup so the team can be on it or something, but even on the Inside Texas segments, Mack isn't on it.

I think this is one of those "Its a negative because I haven't actually watched it" thing rather than an actual time sink for a head coach.

LHN has a significant effect on this hire. It places an added amount of pressure for a home run hire - something that will kick start the network, renew interest in a big way, and make Texas a more marketable brand again. ESPN did not sign up for project hires. They are watching this, involved in this, in a big way.

The LHN has some great programming - both about UT athletics and academics. Interesting topic about the LHN and our soon-to-be head coach. We need to hire the football coach first and foremost and not worry about how well he fits into the television role. The LHN is a luxury no other school has but Texas needs to get back to the basics of coaching, coaching and coaching. Patterson is a very smart man - I have the utmost confidence our athletic department and football program will run like a well-oiled machine.

I agree I think a home run hire like Saban or a Harbaugh would reinvigorate the push to get the LHN out there for all of Texas to see. I live in Houston and I have been waiting to get it here.

Switch to Uverse!

Switch to Uverse!
We used to have it but switched to DirectTV and are locked into it for another year. Really miss Uverse though. It's a much better provider!

I was under the impression that as far as LHN is concerned, the Head Coach's requirements only equate to an hour a week. Mack Brown spent more time than necessary in most cases.

I believe that's the case anyways.

ESPN has already given that approval for less demand, but fill that demand with a Higher up than the reporters.

If it comes down to hiring an elite coach that ESPN and IMG approve of and one of their concerns is the time that the LHN network is going to take up of their week I guarantee you that the LHN will find ways to lessen the strain. Hiring a guy like Saban is worth more to the network if they are winning games and competing for titles than hiring a good TV personality that doesn't improve our on the field results.

Winning cures all and will get more carriers to carry LHN. Hiring a guy like Saban would change the dynamic immediately.

Mack did two 30 minute shows weekly (Rewind with Mack Brown and Game Plan) he also did an hour long show with Craig Way (sp?). You have All Access practice reports which don't require any on camera face time but the hosts often discuss topics with the coaches and do on the spot interviews during some of the practices (5 minutes max). Then there is the weekly press conference, I'm sure every coach has a weekly press conference now days but this was also televised. So that is about 4-5 hours weekly that cameras are in your face as a coach. YES, this is a consideration and a factor to the next HC at Texas. That's why somebody like Mike Leach would never be chosen here, while he is entertaining to watch as an opposing fan I would not want him representing my school on camera that much.

I heard that part of the concession agreement from ESPN/IMG/LHN would be that Saban would be allowed to let his assistants be the headliners in some of the programs Mack was the mouthpiece for. If we are indeed opening up the checkbook for some the best assistants I wouldn't mind delegating this to them.

Additionally, I heard that in the beginning the filming of the programs used to be much more labored. Towards the end the producers knew how to have everything teed up for Mack so that he could get in and out quicker. Remember an hour of screen or camera time takes longer to actually film. Mack had to put up with a lot as the LHN figured things out but it should be easier on the next coach, but that's not to say it won't be without its headaches. They will eventually find their groove with the new HC as well.

To echo what others have said, a personality (resume) like Saban or Harbaugh would increase viewership demand. Briles and Strong don't do anything for interest, IMO.

It would be interesting to hear what the assistants have to say.
