By the way, where does one find Speed Zone ans Celsius WG?
You can get Speed Zone off Amazon or most Longhorn Irrigation Supply franchises. The Celsius can be purchased on Amazon but is about $50 more than normal retail. I can sell you either product.

SHA thanks for your forum:

I have a bougainvillea in a large pot, that I have tried to winter over.  I have never done this before.  It has looked wilted for the last month but remains green.  I am worry I have over watered it.  I moved it out doors today.  The soil at top feels dry but damp about 3 inches down.  Do you have any advice as to what I have done wrong and how I might save it? Forgot- I live in Longview, Tx.

Thanks in advance.

I probably don't need to ask this but I will . . are there hole(s) in the bottom of the pot? Needs to have a way to drain.

I would just keep the plant outdoors in a spot that will offer about a half day sun (east side, preferably). Let it get completely dry before watering. Bougainvillea likes to go dry before the next watering.

Once the plant begins showing new growth and perks up, you can put in a spot that has longer sunlight.

The thing with pots, though . . . it can be very frustrating when you have a plant going down in a pot. Who knows what's going on with it? At times I've tried to diagnose such things and it turned out someone poured their margarita in the pot as they walked by and the salt, dissolved by the time I was on the scene, was killing the plant. So it's not always what you think with these things . . .

A big shout out to Longview!

Just want to say Mark is a true professional. He spent the last couple of hours advising me regarding generic planter box questions. Thanks for your patience!

SirHornsalot,

I have a lawn in Cedar Park that is part Bermuda and part St Augustine.  I've got a ton of weeds (Dandelions, Plantain, Yellow Wood Sorrel, Annual Bluegrass, Crabgrass, Henbit, Clover, Thistle, Spurge, Goosegrass, & dollar weed) with Henbit being by far the worst at the moment.

I laid some scott's weed and feed on the Bermuda section which has the most weeds.  It did a great job of making the grass greener, but it didn't appear to kill a single weed.  Is there a better weed killer that you recommend for my situation?

Thanks!

I have this same issue with my yard.  Any help SHA would be greatly appreciated.

Nonsense, they all do. You should have had them call me about it. :) I bought some speed zone there last month. Keep in mind, it's not wise to use this once temps get over 85, so they may have only had so much inventory to begin with.

If you don't have it by next Thursday, I'll be in Austin and will have some with me.
I ordered it off of amazon but thanks for the offer. What weed spray do you recommend once the temps heat up?

Sorry, I'm having some trouble with the site today. I can't start new topics but I can now post.

Yea, Scott's weed killers aren't all that strong so you can apply and hardly notice there's weed killer down.

I have a product that I can get via the commercial side that's called "Viper" and it's bermuda-only product, but it awesome at cleaning up a lawn. I experimented with it last year on a new customer who had an awful bermuda lawn, tons of clover.

Two weeks after applying, it was completely clean.

The other problem you're having is the act of feeding and killing AT THE SAME TIME. So there's three types of products you can get - 1) that does a very good job at feeding and not so great at killing weeds, or 2) a product that does a great job at killing weeds and an ok job of feeding the lawn, or 3) a product that doesn't do either very well, such as Vigoro.

On the retail side, there's not a product for bermuda that does a real good job at killing weeds, items "2" in the above described list. But Scott's is definitely good at feeding. For relatively weed-free bermuda lawns, it's an awesome product. But if you have weeds, you better have a game plan for them separate from Scott's products.

For St Augustine folks, I do not recommend you use Scott's Bonus S, a weed/feed for St Augustine. Instead, go with Fertilome's St Augustine Weed/Feed. It's time release like Scott's, but with a higher grade of atrazine thus better weed killing and less danger to trees.

Celsius WG. It's pricey at $90-$125, but it will kill every weed in the turf (except nutsedge), including broadleaf. It will not burn the turf (a big deal) after spraying. And it can be used on all turf grass, so it's very versatile.

I can help you get this product as it's not available in any Lowes of HD. Just email me and I can order it and have it sent to your place.

Thanks Mark.  So it sounds like I can get Viper through you?  How much would that be and how would we go about that?  (I don't have your email, but it looks like I can message you on your website.)  Sounds like Viper would kill my St Augustine if I applied it there?  Thanks!

greenthumbtx@verizon.net  is my email.

Yes, you can get Viper through me. It runs $27 a bag (40 lbs).

Yea, Viper would wipe out your St Augustine and the replacement sod that would follow. :) Use Fertilome for the St Augustine. Your spreader should cast three feet on each side, so just use your best judgement and pure athletic skills to do it properly. For narrow gaps where there is a bed nearby, cast the product by hand. Wash hands afterward.

I've got a crew coming down in the next week or so, I can send a bag of both if you need them.

You're very welcome, always glad to help someone get into gardening. The pleasure's all mine.

Trying to locate a HD with the raised bed you wanted. I may have to just order it online.

Had the pleasure of meeting our man Sean Adams in person today. I dropped by to talk with him about a patio and his lawn today. Very nice guy and I enjoyed our short visit. Looking forward to handling his lawn and hopefully giving him a little paradise to chill in in the back yard.

It figures though. I come to Austin, tornados touch down in Denton County. This happened to me last year. So far, nothing has come close to my house, thankfully.

I had the pleasure of meeting Sirhornsalot today and introducing him to a yard that is in dire need of some TLC.  Mark, thanks for visiting my house and my sister's place today - it was great hanging out with you.  Next time book an overnight ticket so that we can cut loose without worrying about time.

Thanks buddy.

Do you live in the Amazon Jungle?

Give me a weedeater, 20 mins and hide the children. LOL

It was great to meet you, too. We've talked so many times I felt like I knew you, but now we have faces to associate with the names and that's always good.

It was also great to meet McPhaul and Dennis today. We had a lot of fun, ate good, and covered a lot of ground in a short amount of time.

Sounds like we'll have an opportunity sometime soon to repeat and expand on the original offense. :) I'm truly looking forward to it!
