The 5 Who Thinks She Is a 10

First of all I am, and will always be, very proud of my University and the degree that hangs on the wall. I am also not suggesting this is a bad hire (though I do believe that we will going through this process again in 5 years - not because he will do a poor job, but due to the expectations).

Yet, right now, are we the 5 who thinks she is a 10? We think all the 10s will be fighting for us - Saban, Tomlin, Jim and John, Fisher, Gus, etc. It sounds like now, according to McPhaul, they all wanted nothing to do with us. So we are pursued by a 2 or 3 who treats us like we are a 10...which perpetuates our confirmation bias.

What a sad day. Once again, it could end up like Carroll did after being far down the list for SC. Yet, I think it confirms that our athletic department and the environment (political and otherwise) around it are a mess right now. We are a first class university in a top ten city. We like to think that, like Switzer and others have said, this is the best job in the nation, but today is does not appear so. We Are Texas, but is that hubris part of the problem?

BGR, great point. Other than the one you mentioned, I can't think of any of anyone making that change. Meyer was off for a year before landing at Ohio State and I don't think South Carolina was a top 10 program when the Old Ball Coach left took that job.

Help me out here, this a board for discussion and sharing of thoughts. I'm 37 and have followed Texas closely since '83. During that time we have had one magical run from '04 through '09 that is what most of us think when we think Texas. Other than that, what have we accomplished since the early 80s with the greatest resources and talent pools in the country. I appreciate your thoughts but need a little more than 'face palm' as a reply.

BGR, that is a good point. I am just as guilty as I never considered it when reading the list of candidates and believing that one of them was possible. Many others believed that they were possible.

Urban was away for longer than that, and Spurrier was slinking back from his failed NFL run. USC, Notre Dame, Florida, Nebraska, Penn St, Ohio St, Michigan...all college football blue bloods that have made hires in the last decade, and only Ohio St made a splash hire, and that was pulling Urban from retirement. I'd put Strong's resume above any of Kiffin, Sarkisian, Muschamp, Pellini, O'Brian, Hoke.

We're a 5 that needed a tummy tuck and a boob lift. Instead of a good surgeon, we went with someone who will love us even though we're ugly.

Texas A&M was in the top ten when Bear left for Alabama. Worked out okay for Bama. Rod Rodriquez was either in the top ten or very close when he left Wext Virginia, his alma mater, for Michigan. DIdn't work out at Michigan but he had a good first year at Arizona. Utah was in the top ten when Meyer left for Florida. Worked out well. Basketball coach Brown left quite a few top ten basketball programs for other gigs. Roy Williams left a perennial top ten Kansas basketball team for North Carolina. Paul Dietzel left a top ten LSU program in football to coach at West Point. Didn't work out. There are others but it is past my bed time. Hope that all is well with BGR with our personal life.
