Texas vs West Virginia weekend series

RPI is now 24. Oklahoma State at 20 and WVU at 21. The big 12 is pretty down this year but at least one Big 12 team has to host. Would figure it would be the champion - though does the committee look at the co-champion thing or consider the tournament seeding?

A strong conference tournament showing could seal the deal but will be hard to move up much in RPI as the big 12 opponents all have pretty subpar RPI. 1st round game, Kansas RPI 104.

I know the committee is in love with RPI over head to head or who finishes higher in the conference standings/tournament (see Texas baseball vs okie lite).

Fans want David Pierce fired 

I have been critical of Pierce because we have seen players make fundamental mistakes multiple times and the team played some inconsistent ball during his time at Texas. Even some of the baseball experts on this board have wondered and commented out loud.

Hard to please some, Texas baseball continues to stack up well in its conference and nationally. Texas is playing its best baseball of the year right now. 3 starters maybe emerging to lead us into the Postseason. Lucas Gordon, LBJ, and Tanner Witt with 3 good innings today. Let’s get behind this team. 

We did well, most of the time, in a weak Big XII however we got swept at home to ou (who was in last place at the time) and blew a 4 run lead in the bot of the 9th at Baylor (who isn't that good this year). We didn't do that well against good teams out of conference this year. Our biggest non conference win is over aggy who is a below average $ec team. You are correct about playing our best ball of the year.

Which coaches on campus right now have better success rate than Pierce? Elliot with volleyball, Reese with swimming, anyone else? 3 conference championships in 6 seasons, 3 trips to omaha in 5 chances including being in the semifinal. 

At his current rate, more successful than Augie to start his career. Augie won it all in year 6 though so that'll be the trump card if Pierce can't pull that off this year.

Sorry, you can't compare to Pierce (0 NCs) to Augie (5 NCs). Augie built Cal-State Fullerton into a powerhouse and won 2 titles here at Texas. So if Pierce is having a better start than Augie, he should win it all this year, no? BTW, 2 of the 3 trips for Pierce in Omaha were 2 & BBQ with last year being the exception. 

Several coaches here at Texas have NC's that you haven't mention. Rowing, tennis (men & women), golf, track, plus the ones you mention. After all, aren't NCs the main goal of any sport?

I'm glad we had the weekend we did and I hope I'm wrong about this team however I just don't feel we have the consistent pitching to go far this year. Again, I truly hope I'm wrong but I will be rooting for them every game!

You know fans criticize Nick Sabin for his decisions. There may be things goin on at practice that critics of coaching decisions don’t see. And sometimes those things are week to week, sometimes lasting longer. Coaches especially in baseball have to find that combination that works in pitching and lineups. Results don’t lie, and Pierce has produced some high level results..  this year has been very impressive especially with all the losses from last years team.

Results do not lie. 100% correct. Poor pitching decisions cost 4-5 games at least So for no one has denyed this Yet.

Team lost a lot of players so did the other teams. Portal makes it easier to reload. On to Big 12 tourny and win it all.

I have refused to engage you in the poor pitching decisions. I will say simply again, Pierce is probably making pitching decisions on practice, and maybe some other minor injuries we as fans never hear about. Very easy every year to point at pitching decisions or one poor series at home against OU. I am making a much more objective view of the state of the Longhorns baseball program. Texas is playing its best ball of the year, and I can point to the development of pitchers like LBJ who has all the tools to be a high draft pick. Don’t look now but he has developed into a pretty good pitcher.

Tell me putting a pitcher era 6.45 who gives uo several runs. Then reliving him with a pitcherwitha 1.62 era gives up no runs is a good decision. This has happened more than once.By time conference play starts coach should who can do the job.

Baseball team is playing its best ball of the season going into the postseason 

Surely that points to coaches developing and working with their players. It is really easy to point to just a few points every season to fit a narrative. Those learning experiences are behind this team, and Pierce and Co are making the right decisions right now….

Adjusting and putting Flores at SS everyday has helped the defense as well. But ya that one time he made that decision on what relief pitcher over another one. Let’s just focus on that and the OU series because that’s all that matters.

I agree, I missed a handful of coaches that have acheived more.

Texas has:

National Championship winning coaches: Elliot (volleyball), Flo (T&F), Reese (Swim), Both golf and tennis teams, Rowing

Then there is a tier of coaches who have made several deep runs - White (softball), Pierce (baseball), Schaefer (W-bball)

And then teams who have not achieved high level post season success - CC (brand new coach), M bball (new coach), Soccer, football

You'd think Pierce was in the bottom category the way folks talk about him every year. 

No need to rethink the comment about his resume vs Augie. His first 6 seasons have been better. As I said, Augie won it all in year 6 so unless Pierce pulls that off, Augie takes the edge after this year.

Just speculation here. 
 

maybe it’s part of a developmental plan, not just one game decision ? Maybe it’s early enough in season that coach is trying to find who will step up in clutch moments? Maybe just maybe Coach sees something in practice and wants to see it translate into game action. Maybe it’s a combination of some of the above. Regardless it’s past history and not part of what this team is doing right now and what Pierce and co have been doin down the stretch. Either way it’s a dead horse, are you going to continue to beat it all postseason? Or can we discuss where the team is at now ? Let’s go make a run for a Big 12 tournament title and move forward.

I cannot really tell how you feel about the relief pitching. How about 10 more post about it, that way I could get some clarity… early to mid season relief pitching that is.

That’s a great article. Pretty much sums it up, talks about Pierce as a winner and developing talent. Thanks for giving the insight. The 4th paragraph from the bottom simply says inconsistency in the bullpen, nobody has said there hasn’t been that. However it also talked about the possibility of a run, because of a winner as the leader of the program.
