Following various reports that junior Texas OL Sam Cosmi would opt out of the remainder of the 2020 season, Cosmi confirmed the reports on Sunday afternoon via a statement from UT:

“First and foremost, I want to thank God for my journey here at The University of Texas. It’s been an amazing experience and a true blessing. It was an extremely difficult decision, but after talking with my family, I feel that it’s in my best interest to forgo the remainder of the season. My goal is to prepare for the NFL Draft and work towards that dream of mine. I want to thank everyone at the University, especially Coach Herman, Coach Hand and Coach McKnight, and all who have had a part in my journey. I wouldn’t be here and have had the success I’ve had if it weren’t for them. Coming in as a young skinny lineman who started out on the scout team and ending up where I am now is a true testament to God, this program, and everyone who has helped me become the man I am today. I’m so incredibly grateful for the support of my teammates. I love them all and will be forever thankful for them. The bonds we’ve created go way beyond football and will last a lifetime. Most of all, I want to thank my family, who have been my biggest supporters. They’ve been my rock through it all. I’m so blessed to have them in my life. I am planning on finishing my degree this semester, as well as preparing for the draft, and I’ll be supporting the guys as they finish the season. Thank you to all of Longhorn Nation. I’m going to bleed Burnt Orange for the rest of my life! Hook ‘em!”

Cosmi will forego the remainder of this season as well as his senior season and will enter the NFL Draft.

The junior from Humble, TX has played in all 35 possible games for Texas and has started at tackle in UT's last 34 outings.

Can't help but wonder if there are other mitigating circumstances. Disappointing to see any athlete quit on their team at any level.

It’s a little surprising that we haven’t seen more high-profile midseason opt-outs before the last week or so. But this could be the start of a trend as players smartly realize that playing games during a pandemic may not be worth risking any impact to their potential professional careers. We’ll see as the calendar flips to December if there are a lot of other players who decide to start prepping for the futures

I hope they pull his scholarship immediately, he doesnt deserve a free ride if he opts out before the season ends...he is no longer part of the team, have him move to private housing and provide his own meals, along with his own tuition...I am sure there will be others

That will be great for future recruiting. We will be the only school for punishing a player for sitting out two games that will have no impact on winning the Big 12. Herman said today that the big goal now is to win 70% of their games this year.

crossing the wires right now, Caden Stearns is passing up the final games and declaring for the NFL Draft

The big college sports, football, basketball and baseball, are becoming like minor leagues and that is not a compliment.
Nope, it's a turn off for me.

Listening to UM blather on about how "1st Round draft picks" are the true measure of a good collegiate ? program is, as well. How many academic compromises must a "big time" program make in their pursuit of greatness?

Can't say I disagree with this hardass take.

You're on scholarship to play football, son. All team and university benefits cease once you decide not to actively participate in the program. Of course, rivals would use this against us in recruiting.

Agreed on both points. Unfortunately the idea of accountability seems to be fading imo.

On the recruiting front, it has always confused me how SEC schools are rumored to pull scholarships for various reasons and nobody seems to negatively recruit against them for it but situations like this would be a recruiting firestorm. Probably a good thin I am only a lowly class A fb coach.lol

Good point.

But, I'm sure the SEC's media partners - CBS and ESPN in particular - do a good job of sweeping their "roster cuts" under the rug.

Texas  and its fan base better wake up and realize two things

1. We are no longer are the Jones'

2. We are not back

We might be a money making institution that many programs would die for the revenue it generates, but when the marquis program hasn't been in the National Championship conversation in over a dozen years. Austin we have a problem
