Ehlinger returns!
After missing three games with knee injury recovery, Texas commit now poised for return
Heeeeeeee’sss BACK! Austin Westlake’s Sam Ehlinger has been cleared to play and will make his return this week when the Chaps open district against a strong Austin Vandegrift team.
The Texas commit was sidelined for the past three weeks after having surgery on his left knee. He injured the knee in the season-opening win over then #1 ranked Katy.
Westlake went 1-2 while Ehlinger was sidelined. However, it may have been a blessing in disguise, at least for the team as a whole. In Ehlinger’s absence, Westlake found a running game. Tailback Nakia Watson scored 3 touchdowns while racking up 214 yards in their win over rival Austin Bowie last week.
GIANT KILLERS
The #10 ranked Highlanders from The Woodlands (4-0) have now beat two defending state champions. They defeated former 6A champ Katy and then last week defeated last year’s 5A Div 1 champ Richmond George Ranch, 42-14 last Friday.
BATTLE OF SAN ANTONIO
There are two big games that will dominate the state schedule this week. One of those two pairings will pit #3 Converse Judson (4-0) against #8 Cibolo Steele (3-1). Steele handed the Rockets a 20-13 defeat last year.
Steele’s only loss was to #4 ranked Lake Travis by a heartbreaking 59-56 score back in week #2. Last week, the Knights defeated Smithson Valley, 24-17.
Judson opened the season by knocking off that same Lake Travis team, 35-28, and have been cruising ever since. Last week, the Rockets blew out the New Braunfels Unicorns 54-13.
BATTLE OF BELT LINE ROAD
In a battle for District 7-6A and South Dallas bragging rights, the #2 DeSoto Eagles will host #7 Cedar Hill Longhorns. This is always a shoot out and this year promises to be no different.
Cedar Hill began the year ranked near the top of the top 10, but were beaten by national power Las Vegas Bishop Gorman in week #1. DeSoto meanwhile rolled but last week had a hiccup of sorts – having to pull out a come-from-behind win over unranked Midland, 49-43.
Texas commit Xavier Newman will be playing along what is probably the largest offensive line the Longhorns have faced this year. Both teams are ranked in the MaxPreps National Top 25 poll with DeSoto ranked #4 and Cedar Hill #11.
BATTLE OF DENTON
#3 Denton Ryan and #7 Denton take to the field to settle bragging rights Friday night. Ryan knocked off ranked Frisco Lone Star last week 51-34 while Denton High beat Keller Timber Creek 37-28.
Ryan’s standout defensive lineman Javaris Steward has been removed from the team, it was reported this week. Steward did not play in last Friday night’s game and was not listed on the roster. Ryan’s head coach confirmed the news this week, but did not elaborate on the reason(s).
Steward verbally committed to USC last fall, then switched his commitment to UCLA in February. He switched again this past August, changing to UT-San Antonio.
In a rare shot of Montrell Estelle playing defense, Estelle and a teammate try to bring down a Hughes Springs running back during Friday night’s action.
