Texas Bowl - Postgame Press Conference

This is the shit you get when you recruit guys you would trust to babysit your little kids.

I've seen quite a number of threads on other boards that want to concentrate on how "mad" Charlie is and how that's really great and all that jazz. Personally...I don't give a f about mad..what I want to see is embarrassment...along with a vow to do something about it. I know we have problems to fix...lots of them...but Patterson managed to take an offense that was an embarrassment in one year and turn it into what I would call the best in the big 12 the following year.

How did he do it??  He dumped what he had been doing previously with his offense and hired someone that managed to take the talent he had on hand and use it in the most efficient way possible.

I don't have the answers. Matter of fact..I got so upset tonight that I couldn't watch most of the 2nd half and therefore I admit I have no credentials.  But I watched enough of the game to know that we need some rather drastic changes in our offense...and if we don't...it's my prediction that we will not be capable of scoring enough points next year to win more than 6 or 7 games (AGAIN)

If you watched the PC, Charlie specifically said he was embarrassed and that no Texas team should ever finish like this. He vowed to fix the offensive issues through competition and hard work.

But yea, I hear ya.

isn't playing with passion and energy largely the responsibility of the head coach?
Yes it is, regardless of what others say.  Not every player is self-motivated, and it would be impossible to recruit only those that are.

Great teams always seem to have coaches who know how to get the most out of their players.  That is called motivation.

I know you're right Mark. It's never a good idea to post after a game like tonight ...when everyone is upset about something. But wow..this is disappointing.

I saw someone post the following thought on another board...but it summarizes exactly what I'm thinking right now and why i'm so down in the dumps.

" It seems they are going all in on a style of offense without the key personnel (i.e. QB) to be successful and no answer in the foreseeable future in sight... I like Strong and think he has potential here but this stubborn philosophy and misguided loyalty to Watson could be his demise."..

In other words, I think if we don't abandon the style of offense that Strong/Watson stubbornly refused to abandon this year, we're going to have the same results next year. That offense requires both a "special qb" as well as a "better than average" OL.

We're a long way from better than average OL and extremely difficult problem to fix overnight.

(This is an edit): I'm not saying Watson needs to be fired necessarily or that I don't think he's capable of developing another offense. What I'm saying is that I want Strong/Watson to change their mind about the way they're running the offense and do something different. I'm tired of reading about how they spend the practice screaming at Heard for not getting it. Give him something else if he doesn't get it.

Agree, Pringle, but I don't think Swoopes could have won with any scheme from Wishbone T to Spread. He stared down running lanes tonight you could have driven a Kenworth through only to give the ball to the TB who got smashed after 1 yd. I won't bore you with what you already know.

I don't think you have to be special to run this offense. It's not that complicated. But we were watching a TE play QB with no one behind him to fall back on. And when the QB won't run the ball and you can't pass – all a defense has to do is attack the RBs.

Let's see what Heard can do and hopefully bring Gentry along enough to be a capable back up. I think we'll be surprised by the OL we see next fall.

'Mad' isn't the word I would use to describe Strong at the post game.

Crushed

Embarrassed

Humiliated

Despondent

Frustrated

I've sat through all 13 post games, and I've seen 'mad' more than once. Tonight was not one of them.

No, it is not. Some people are passive by nature. We don't need or want passive people. We want fireballs.

Hook 'em!
of course some people are passive by nature. IMO, it's part of the coach's job to motivate, push, prod, inspire or whatever it takes to get those types to play with energy. not everybody is a VY-type alpha male.

strong has mentioned this type of thing before this season. at some point he needs to look in the mirror.
