Taking Sides on "Redskins"

Interesting read from the Capitalism Institute about the origin of "Redskins".

Smithsonian Institution senior linguist Ives Goddard, a top scholar of Native American languages, researched the origins of the name “redskins†and concluded that it originated as an expression of solidarity amongst multi-tribal delegations traveling to Washington to negotiate with the government on their Native American policies.

In a month were we saw the Veteran Scandal FINALLY make front page news (the issue has been a problem for decades. . .W doubled the VA budget but warned Obama the problem was even bigger). . . we see our Senators wasting time not trying to fix the problem but pandering to the PC police. . .

Really Sean .. . .thank you Senators?   For what. . . ignoring real problems in this nation to chase a red herring?  Wagging the dog I guess. . . .

PS, I should add. . .it was 49 not 50 senators and that list will be trimmed by 4-8 this Nov so the minority of PC knuckleheads will have a smaller voice .. . .

Excellent post, echeese. Agree completely. Much bigger fish to fry and it's almost criminal that they choose to divert attention to such a lame issue.

Understandably though, the kitchen is getting hot and the cook no longer is comfortable being there.

I thought this kinda funny

if it's offensive to the native american community... change the damn name!
I would equate the name Redskins to a team being called Wops, Dagos, Spics, Chinks, or any other derogatory reference to some nationality or ethnic group.

My stance on this has evolved. The first time I heard anyone complain about this (early 70s), I just thought it was a stupid thing to complain about. Now, I think it's time to change the name. Regardless of the origins of the word, it is seen as a derogatory term, analogous to teams called "Spics, Jewboys, or Nig*ers". I am also 1/8 Cherokee, but I have never thought of myself as a Native American. However, this is not about what is offensive to me. We need to think about this outside of our own personal boxes. As a former Cowboys fan, I'd be happy if they just replaced the "R" with a "D".
