Strong says Bedford is not to blame

Java,

Not sure what your what your seeing in the Article as he seems to indicate that the Coaches are the ones responsible for the players not executing. Its the responsibility of the Coaches to make sure the players understand , and know how to Execute the defensive game plan and if they don't then it is because it was not communicated to them from the very staff that Coach them.  Again every Coach that has ever been fired will tell you they had a game plan that would have been successful if only the players would have executed it correctly...I am hoping they can get this corrected but I was upset with Charlies response that "The Players did not Execute" well whose job is it to make sure they do execute.

One thing I find interesting . . . . Charlie Strong was known as a defensive genius/guru prior to him becoming a head coach. Yet, here we see his defense get shredded for 50 by a pretty average offense.

Imagine, if you will, a Briles or Herman offense that doesn't score 20 pts a game? I can't either.

Bedford is in trouble here. His secondary is a mess. The DL doesn't get pressure even on an average OL like Cal. The LBs shine, but maybe thats because they just shine. Thing is – Charlie needs to get extremely personally involved with this defense.

Because right now, he's failing at both the defensive reputation and the management of a coach. He'll either continue to watch it happen or he'll get a-holes and elbows real fast. I hope its the latter.

Oh message boards after a loss.

Look, I understand the tendency to overreact after a loss. However, there is plenty of blame to go around.

But that doesn't mean all hope is lost. Sure I will be the first to say that binge drinking kool-aid is not the smartest strategy for Texas Longhorns fans in the 2010s but that doesn't mean we will lose to everyone down the stretch. Each week is different in college football.

Plus, let's remember that Alabama gave up 421 yards of passing to Ole Miss yesterday. 421!!!! And 527 yards of total offense. The spread is built to gain yards and score a lot of points.

The biggest issue is not creating turnovers. Cal did a great job of reviewing their game film and seeing what other teams were doing, preparing that Texas was going to be looking at the same game tape, and then making their own adjustments that caught Texas off guard to where they couldn't make some plays to create turnovers. Then Cal got a few stops and won the game.

This was a trap game. Home opener for Cal, first road game for Buechele and others, and a late night game that ended around 1:30am CST today, unbridled hubris, etc.

Cal is on scholarship too, Texas is still Texas whether ranked 11th in the country or 0-12. Texas got a reality check and now they have a bye week to get themselves ready for conference play.

I'm glad they have two weeks to stew on this one.

"but that doesn't mean we will lose to everyone down the stretch. Each week is different in college football."

That sounds like last year to me.

Bama gave up a bunch of passing yards to a very GOOD TEAM. Cal isn't good.

Right now, we're not even San Diego State good.

Chris,

With all due respect, the defense gave up 50 (and should have been 57) last night because the secondary has not a single player who understands the scheme or where they are supposed to be on the field. They are poorly coached. And by "poorly" I mean abysmally.

Nothing about last night said "DBU."

Under this staff, nothing related to the pride of UT football is on display. Do the math and you will find out Charlie Strong could go 25-0 and his record at UT will only barely match the historical average for the program.

Does anyone think Charlie will get his contract renewed if after five years his overall record is below average? Well, Charlie not being up the the standard of UT football at the end of his 5 year contract is already cast in stone.

I would have more confidence in the direction of the program if Charlie had shown any level of being able to evaluate position coaches and coordinators. He's a great mid-major coach and a great recruiting coordinator. After that....

If there was plenty of blame to go around for our offense the last two years why did getting rid of one horrible coach create so much improvement? Charlie had his WTF moment with Watson. Now he's making excuses for the defensive side. It's where he himself is supposed to shine. I'm willing to wait and see what happens mainly because there's nothing else I can do. But I have zero faith in Bedford. And zero faith in Charlie. Too many WTF's.

Maybe Charlie is right. In that case, I'll blame Bedford AND Charlie. That should cover those that are too blame.

First of all I'm glad Charlie didn't treat Bedford like Saban treated Kiffin a week ago. I don't like Kiffin, but he deserved to be treated with respect just like anyone else, and he just won a NC. This just proves once again that Saban is a dick. I mean bully.

I like Bedford as a person and former UT player, but he needs to fix the defense or be gone. If Charlie survives for another season then he needs to bring in the next Will Muschamp. UT can pay top dollar and any DC that we would get would know their going to working with elite players.

I noticed that the Ohio State offense was not as successful last year as when they had Tom Herman even though Urban Myer is an offensive coach. Even though Charlie is a defensive coach, I want him to have the top defensive mind in the country to work with and after last night I have doubts if he has that.

I hope Vance fixes the defense so we can have a successful season, but we can have any more defensive performances like that. Last night I was having flashbacks that Manny Diaz was still our DC.

I agree with you except I think if Charlie could fix it he already would've done so.

I'm not sure he even recognizes the problem. He didn't with Watson.

WE HAVE THE TALENT NOT. To give up. 500 plus yds in offense. SOOO. What's the problem. I. Know. Do YOU. ???

I think one of the main problems is that Bedford and strong are reactive instead of proactive. Game plan and player personnel. They wait way too damn long to pull someone out of the game. They wait and see what the offense does instead of dictating the game. There are plenty of defensive coordinators that would do better it just sucks cause this staff is great at recruiting.

I agree. We made Hansen look like Jerry Rice. My hope the young guys will develop during the season and Shane and the offense will get better as the season goes on to where win enough games to go to a decent bowl, have a great recruiting class.

Then if we need an upgrade in our coaching staff, Charlie can see that. He seems to do better on his second picks like Traylor, Gilbert, and Mattox.

"Cal did a great job of reviewing their game film and seeing what other teams were doing, preparing that Texas was going to be looking at the same game tape, and then making their own adjustments that caught Texas off guard to where they couldn't make some plays to create turnovers. So you do realize this is the very definition of being outcoached don't you?

Ok. Let me get this right.....UT has young players (for the tenth year in a row) and it's just a matter of having our players execute properly and that's going to be taken care of over the bye week.

How is it that Houston seems to be playing at a high level so quickly? Is it because they have a history of five star recruits going there that UT can't. Is it because they normally pay their coaches more money that Texas or that Houston has much better facilities than Texas or a much larger fan base than Texas?

Or is it simply a big difference in their head coaches and as a result, how their programs are run? It seems more and more Strong was chosen as a politically correct coach to show how "enlightened" UT is (diversity is everything) and perhaps other candidates may have been a better choice.

Oh, and don't look now but Loiusville seems to be playing decent ball right now. Don't they realize they have young players and new coaches?

Why are we not play more press in the first 5-10 yrds or straight up man on man coverage?  The recruits on corner and in the nickel have speed, the "long arms" that were so coveted and highlighted when they were signed.  Couldn't be any worse than the wide and I mean wide open by 10-15 yards receivers that we say this weekend.

And if I see #14 speed wiff on another open field tackle, I may start puking blood

WHY isn't Brandon Jones seeing ANY playing time ??? Bedford doesn't have a clue !, Didn't OSU fire him several years ago !
