Story: Ash retires from playing football & other press conference notes

Ash finishes 8th on the Texas career passing yards list with 4,728.  A look at who he finishes behind (and ahead of):

1.  Colt McCoy - 13,253

2.  Major Applewhite - 8,353

3.  James Brown - 7,638

4.  Petere Gardere - 7,396

5.  Chris Simms - 7,097

6.  Vince Young - 6,040

7.  Bret Stafford - 4,735

8.  David Ash - 4,728

9.  Shea Morenz - 3,774

10.  Case McCoy - 3,641

Nice career at UT despite missing 12 games in his last 2 seasons.

David is in elite company.  I am so sorry that he can't finish his career, but I think he is correct.  The Lord is taking care of him - for the rest of his life.

I'm quite certain that I read that he has been experiencing no symptoms since shortly after the BYU game and that he has been medically cleared.  However, experiencing symptoms after sustaining no significant hits is telling.  He is making a wise choice, imo.

I really appreciate everything David has done for us.

David Ash is the kind of man you would want your daughter to marry.

Yes, he is.

He was so confident this year.  I think that is the most disappointing aspect of his retirement.  It was easy to sense the growth he experienced under Strong.  Ash is a great guy.

I am happy and sad that he had to call it quits as a football player. Happy that he made the smart decision and sad that he had to give up his dream.

By all accounts he is a great young man and I expect he will do well in his future endeavors.

Thank you David.

lot of good posts in this thread. he's got another 60 years to live (or 70 if he hopes to catch slim) an that's what really matters.

glad he's going to be involved with the program. i'm sure he'll be an asset.

I spoke with someone this weekend who is close friends with his family and they mentioned that they think he is working to become a doctor. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but whatever he goes into for a career I'm sure he will be very successful.

My former teammate and Texas G.A. Riley Dodge had a similar situation in 2010 and had to hang up his pads due to concussions. It is truly heart breaking to see a young man have to give up the sport they love due to injury... but there are more important things in life than football, and good health is one of them.
