Those going to the game drink lots of water along with your chosen beverage.
Heat, humidity a concern for Notre Dame season opener
The WSBT 22 First Alert Weather Team expects the heat index to be well into the 90s throughout the day on Saturday. The heat and humidity could be dangerous, especially for anyone tailgating.
The time of the game is another concern for paramedics.
Kick off isn’t until after 7:30 p.m., but there will be people tailgating all day.
"The concern for us is people get out and they start tailgating in the morning and then they, you know, drink and eat all day and then the game starts in the evening, so that puts a lot of pressure on the EMS system,†said Capt. Gerard Ellis with the South Bend Fire Department.
"Saturday is going to be one of the high temperatures during this game. You have a lot of people consuming alcoholic beverages during the whole entire day instead of a day game,†said Justin Watkins, a paramedic with South Bend Fire Department.
This will be the first time that Notre Dame's home opener is a night game in several years -- increasing the chances that people can become dehydrated.
But there are some things paramedics say you can do to help beat the heat.
"If you can, stay in the shade. I know it's going to be hard on game day depending on where you are, but you know, wear a hat. Wear loose clothing. Stay hydrated,†said Capt. Ellis.
If you are going to be tailgating on Saturday, one of the things you should be doing is drinking a lot of water.
"Keep hydrated with the good stuff, with the sports drinks, the water. And balance the two. Enjoy your time, enjoy yourself, but nobody wants to end up in the hospital with heat exhaustion,†said Watkins.
Notre Dame will have a lot of water on hand and ways cool off near the stadium.
They said it will be a lot harder for them to help out with tailgaters out in the parking lots, but South Bend Fire Department will be going around to make sure that everyone is okay.
Officials say if you start feeling nausea or dizziness it might be a sign of heat exhaustion and what you'll want to get in the shade or find someplace that's air conditioned for a few minutes.
