First reported by Bobby Burton and 247, Texas running back coach Tommie Robinson is headed back to California. I would expect Gilbert/Strong hire a replacement quickly.

Anyone else just really not bothered by this? I wish him nothing but success but most of us were kind of hoping he'd be replaced anyways. I expect them to move Traylor over to RB coach and bring in the Wells to coach TE.

A bit concerning with Robinson heading West are his contributions to Texas recruiting.  He's a guy that talks to a lot of recruits - and they respect him a lot.  He doesn't just talk to offensive recruits or RB's...  he's a trusted recruiter for Texas and his absence will be missed.

Longhorns need to offer and land a capable replacement.

Former DeSoto HC & SMU RB coach Claude Mathis is a guy that was rumored to join the staff under Mack Brown's regime.  It never materialized.  He is a guy that might get a serious look at the position with Robinson's departure. He knows the state and can recruit it.

as Mike has said before, get Tony Levine and make Traylor a RB coach

HS HC out of Houston (I haven't done much research on these guys):

  • Kirk Martin (might not want to leave so he can coach his kids)
  • Don Clayton
  • Stephen Dixon
  • Padriac McGinnis
  • Craig Stump (lol jk)
  • Gene Johnson?

I really like the sound of those last two but all of them have their plusses. Beau would be my first pick out of that group. Texas connection. Can coach Tightends. I'm still wanting Traylor to move over to RB Coach, so this could work.

Yeah - the problem with Beau is that he just signed a contract with Tulsa a couple of weeks ago.  Would be a bit of a dick move to pick up and leave.

I could see that rubbing people the wrong way. Especially this close to NSD.

I guess the real question is - who is in charge of this hiring?  Is Gilbert doing the hiring with Strong signing off, or is this a Strong hire with input from Gilbert?

Judging by Strong's interview with the LHN a week or two back, I'm assuming Strong will be giving Gilbert the chance to hire who he wants.

FWIW - multiple sites are reporting that Robinson was told he might want to look elsewhere weeks ago.  If thats the case - its likely a replacement has already been decided upon.

I understand Coach Strong and Gilbert would want a RB coach who knows the Baylor system so they don't have to teach it to him. However, I'd rather have a RB coach who is a lights out recruiting stud just like when Tim Brewster was on the staff.

There's a reason all the RB recruits are visiting this weekend and didn't visit last weekend.

Heard the same. Which is why I'm guessing Traylor may be the RB Coach (in waiting) and then we'll grab the Wells guy from Utah State that has been talked about so much.
