Next Saturday is a big day for Mack Brown's future at Texas: No matter what, a win for Texas at Baylor next week gives the Longhorns a share of the Big 12 title. Oklahoma knocking off Oklahoma State would make it an outright title, but I'm betting Brown is back in 2014 if Texas pulls the upset against Baylor in a winnable game in Waco next week. Worth noting: the Bears' best defender, safety Ahmad Dixon, will miss the first half after being ejected for targeting against TCU on Saturday. Can Case McCoy and Mike Davis take advantage? Brown deserves a ton of credit for rallying his team from a 1-2 start, which included firing defensive coordinator Manny Diaz and bringing analyst Greg Robinson to campus. That's paid off big time. Brown has underachieved the last three seasons, and still needs help for a BCS bid, but there's one major factor that helps Brown's case: No clear candidate. Art Briles told me he cannot envision talking to other teams after the season after signing a contract extension. He was the best candidate for the job. The Nick Saban talk is wasted breath, though fascinating. David Shaw doesn't sound like he's going anywhere. Mike Gundy might make the jump, but it'll take more than a less-than-ideal relationship with his AD to make him say goodbye to his alma mater. This isn't Ohio State after 2011. Urban Meyer's not out there. There's no clear candidate that Texas could easily convince to come to Austin. It might be better off for Texas to keep Mack. That could change if the regular season ends in a rout.

How in the world did we get stuck with SEC wannabe and Mizzou-ex David Ubben as our Big 12 FOX columnist? Right now, I'd trade him for a donkey and a bottle of Cuervo. He sucks!

What makes him so sure that "the Nick Saban talk is wasted breath"?

I agree with everything he said.

Briles and Malzahn have been my #1. Saban would be awesome but I don't believe any of it. Not excited about Mora, Jr.

We're kinda in a pickle here.

How in the world did Clay Travis end up as the FOX in-studio "expert" on Big 12 football?

FOX evidently spent all its money on Erin Andrews and decided to go low budget with every other hire.

There are prob 20 coaches people could name that would be better choices than Mack next season. At least

there is no good reason whatsoever on any level Mack being back next year would be a good thing

I dont believe the Saban talk is wasted breath. Time will tell

If he doesnt come hire another great coach. Once The Texas job is officially open the interest will be high. The #1 job in the country college football wise hasnt been open for 16 years

I don't want Mack back either but I can think of a few good reasons to bring him back. 1st would be if we're going to make a lateral move type hire, or worse. For example, I'd rather keep Mack for a year over hiring a stopgap like Jim Mora, Jr.

Mack coming back next year would be an absolute diaster in every way. Fan interest would be at an all time low since before Mack came here. Recruiting would go in the toilet even more than it has. next season would be nothing but a continued discussion of who UT hires in 2014, and no one would give a crap about the season.

I appreciate what Mack has done, but its time to turn the page. So many better choices out there even outside Nick Saban

I agree. Until the job is officially open there is not a coach I. The world, college or pro, that will openly express interest in the position but when it opens Texas will have plenty solid options.
