SHSU at Texas (Recap & post-game added)

good grief. doubling the suckage, Rice dropped out of the top 25. I have nowhere to turn.... where's that razor blade?

Didn't somebody predict we would score 5 runs a game this year? Damn our bats are dead. At least we have golf.

Shit. We have hit bottom.
in times like these I harken back to a quote from one of my favorite philosophers, one O. A. Phillips. You might know him as Bum.
Years after retiring he was working on the Oilers radio crew and after a particularly tough loss his radio partner said 'Bum, this isn't the end of the world is it? After a pause Bum said 'naw, it ain't the end of the world...but you might could see it from here'

I think that's about where we are.

I would say there's no way to go but up. But of course there's always sideways.

Man, I never thought I would see so many highly ranked Longhorns fall so hard on their face.

Patterson is going to be writing a lot of checks.

I will tell y'all this; this ball club has all the talent in the world.  They have the talent to get on a roll and get hot at the right time.  Their confidence is in the tank right now.  And with that, it appears that the leaders are either not being listened to or they have gone silent.  This team needs leaders.  They need vocal leaders.  They need hits.  And they need confidence.

I still believe they can turn it around, and the way the conference is right now, that's not a big reach.  We are 2 games back, with series against Baylor, Kansas, TCU and Tech remaining.  The clock is certainly ticking, but finishing in or near the top of the conference is not out of the realm of possibility.

These kids need to just quit thinking and start playing ball like they know how.

FINAL: Sam Houston State 5 – Texas 0

The Texas Longhorn baseball team suffered a sobering 5-0 defeat by Sam Houston State on Tuesday. The loss drops the Horns’ overall record to 19-18.

Beyond inching one game closer to being a .500 team, it was the way the loss to the Bearkats unfolded. Texas pitchers gave up five earned runs, 12 hits (including 3 extra base knocks), a wild pitch, and a balk. The defense had an error, and allowed two stolen bases. The offense failed to score while only managing three hits, and one walk - while striking out seven times.

This was a complete and total team loss, borne equally by all three facets of the game. In discussing his concerns moving forward on the season, Augie Garrido said, “I am more concerned with team development and attitude development and success that they can have so they feel good about themselves.”

Outfielder Ben Johnson admitted the team is struggling mentally, “From the beginning of year to now, it's night and day, so it's in there, it just has to come out somehow.”

Collin Shaw was the only hitter in the lineup to reach base twice. Andy McGuire was a bright spot on the mound, throwing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and striking out a batter. Connor Mayes and Ty Marlow also had solid relief appearances.

Josh Sawyer took the loss, dropping to 2-2 on the year. Sawyer gave up four hits and four walks in a start that lasted only four innings. Travis Duke allowed three runs, all of them earned, while only recording one out in the seventh inning.

Texas travels to Lawrence, Kansas this weekend to face the Jayhawks. At 3-6 in league play, Kansas is in last place in the Big 12 standings.

Texas is 5-11 on the road this year including 0-3 in Big 12 play.

On whether this team can earn a regional berth: â€œMy concerns are about the attitude of the team and so far even though they haven't performed during these difficult times to their ability level, or they have tried too hard which makes it look like they aren't trying to perform. It's still about getting to that teamwork that it takes to be successful. So I am more concerned with team development and attitude development and success that they can have so they feel good about themselves. Let the W’s take care of themselves and let the committee decide whether we belong in it. We can't control all of those things.”

On how to help the team: â€œThey gave to gain confidence. They have to have some success so they can regain their confidence in who they are and what they are doing. They are still that same person, they switch between passive and aggressive, you know that's when fear sets in, fight or flight, some of both. We are trying to get them to be the ball players that they are. We know that they are good enough as baseball players - just to bring that baseball player that they are to the ballpark. But you have the tendency to try and do too much. It is very hard to control.”

On C.J Hinojosa playing in left field: â€œWe have had some good things happen as a result of resting players, which is what this was. When we did it for [bret] Boswell, he came back strong, when we did it for C.J he came back better. So when they go through these difficulties they keep repeating themselves, sometimes a day off or two lets them know that they don't have to carry the weight of the world, of the whole team, on their shoulders. So that was what that was about today.”

On last year’s struggles helping with the current streak: â€œI think just stick with it. I mean we were kind of in a similar situation last year like you said but we kind of stuck with the process and snapped out of it. From the beginning of year to now, it's night and day, so it's in there, it just has to come out somehow.”

On how to find their confidence: â€œI think just going back to what we've been doing at the beginning of the year, just getting guys on base early in the innings, early in the games. You know we aren't really doing that right now. I think it causes us to put pressure on ourselves; just got to stick with it and we will break out of this soon.”

if my man joeywa says we're talented, i'll defer to him. but we're damn sure keeping it hidden.

as much as last year's team got on a collective roll in the NCAAs, this year's is in a collective death spiral. both good and bad can be contagious.

sure, we COULD get on a late roll, but it IS late. we're 70% thru the schedule and have lost as many games (18) as we did all last year thru the regular season and conference tourney. sometimes it like Parcells said...you are what your record says you are.

I sure waited a long time for DirecTV to pick up the LHN so I could watch good baseball.  Still waiting.  Saying that this team has "talent" rings hollow when your not winning as every team in the conference has "talent".  Confidence is one thing, but this team needs sustained belief in themselves and I don't see it right now.  Yes, there is time, but this thing needs to turn a 180 at this point.

"We have a Division I player at every position." - Augie Garrido on February 11, 2015

Collegiate Baseball ranked the 2014 recruiting class #7. Three of ten signees were drafted by MLB teams - NONE signed and all 10 came to UT.

In 2013 Texas was ranked #6 and every recruit came to Texas instead of signing with the MLB team that drafted them (5 of 13 players were drafted).

Talent is definitely not the problem.

You saying you want me to sing to you bear?  I sing like a mockingbird.  ;)
