I want a winning football program at Texas, but I want integrity first. Winning football doesn't mean much to me if you can't be proud of how you did it. In fact, it's a shame when football no longer serves it's purpose in developing quality young men through athletics. Money has habit of corrupting everything that was once good.

As for Saban unifying big donors, hard to celebrate that. This Saban farce of rumor assaults is from a bunch of money cowboys all trying to be the front dude in the saddle of the hobby horse.

Now to the OPs post, while I think Saban would be a great hire and huge splash, I don't think he is close to being the only one. Actually I think there is a risk with him due to his age. How long will that fire burn? How well would his style translate here in this conference? Again I think he tops the list, but he is not the end all, be all.

Agreed. Each coach in consideration is going to have their pro's and con's-- there's no absolute perfect fit. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for Saban. But I agree with your points.

We are fortunate to be in a position to have the opportunity to have a big name coach. Not all universities have the luxury of a position so sought after. For whoever is hired, I think the first year will be a pretty big transitional period, with a potentially mediocre season. But things are bound to get better than the last four seasons. Hook'em.

your comments about Saban are offensive to each and every one of his supporters, as well as, Coach Saban. Included on that list are many of our BMD's. Men who are men of integrity. Men who put their names behind their actions. Men who do not hide behind their keyboards. Men who put their money where their mouth is. Will you?

Saban has a very good chance of being a disaster hire for Texas. His success has come from (plug your ears) recruiting. Ie, over signing players and energetic SEC Boo$ters. While the one quality he would bring to Texas is instant recruiting credibility, he's building his own program again from scratch at 62 years old. It's not a given that he properly connects with Texas HS coaches, especially with his poor record of honoring scholarship offers. And I don't know if Texas puts up with recruiting shenanigans or not.
In other words, Texas pays him $100mil guaranteed to ride off into the sunset with mediocre results. Then Texas gets to recruit the next coach with the sales pitch of "We're the school who just had two hall of fame coaches who couldn't meet our standards".

Any coach we hire would have those same exact issues, and NONE have the resume that Saban does.

lilMAC, I have been hanging out here for a while watching to see how the tide goes (pun intended) and I have posed some thoughts previously that I think that would be just as relevant now that the coaching search is getting further, especially with the game this evening. While Saban may have the great resume, I would caution on a couple of things if he were to make the move to UT:

1. Too high of expectations. Does the current fan base see how quickly he has had success at Bama and expect him to replicate it at UT? Is three years to a NC appearance (or even a playoff appearance) too ambitious? Would the fanbase be as understanding if it took 5-6 years? Texas may recruit itself and Saban may help bring recruits in that are on the fence but it is still not an automatic that they will be NC material that quickly.

2. Can the Texas fans hand over the reigns? Again, with pun intended, could the Texas BMDs back off and give him complete control? I was very surprised that Bama "power players" have been able to keep out for so long and just enjoy the ride. If the results don't come in the time frame I mentioned, how long before they want to get their hands in the pot and either give him pressure or "suggestions". If he makes a move that Texas fans question, how long can the fan base suck it up and just drink the kool-aid?

Those are both good questions and I have wondered these thing myself. Still at the end of the day Saban is the best coach in college football right now, and he has shown interest in coming here. We could do worse than try and hire him.

Great questions. Saban must be in complete control, which makes me wonder if the politics and infighting at UT turns him off.
