Jerry Jones named in sexual assault lawsuit
A woman has sued Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones and his organization, accusing Jones of sexually assaulting her five years ago.
A statement from the team says the allegations are "completely false."
Jana Weckerly of Ardmore, Oklahoma just filed a lawsuit. The 27-year-old woman alleges that Jones assaulted her at a Dallas hotel "sometime in May or June 2009."
The lawsuit is seeking more than a million dollars in "monetary relief."
The Dallas Cowboys say a lawsuit alleging a 2009 sexual assault by team owner Jerry Jones is without merit.
The plaintiff's attorney said Weckerly took the photos that recently surfaced in an alleged extortion scheme — photos that show Jones with two women. The lawyer said his client did not appear in those pictures.
Weckerly accuses the Cowboys and Jones of entering into an agreement with her to cover up what happened, instead of going to law enforcement.
"These allegations are completely false," Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple said in a written statement issued Tuesday evening. "This is nothing more than an attempt to embarrass and extort Jerry Jones. This is a shakedown by a lawyer who is a solo practitioner just trying to make a name for himself. The alleged incidents would have been more than five years old."
Dalrymple labeled the lawsuit a "money grab" and added that the Cowboys will "vigorously contest this complaint."
He said law enforcement has been notified because of the serious nature of the allegations.
