I understand but the QB is completely vulnerable in a slide and targeting should not have lost possession

Agree with the vulnerability, but you can't have the play dead at the start of the slide and then reward them with possession on a dead ball penalty. If Klubnik goes head first, likely gets the first down and avoids the hit altogether.
