If the PAC12 goes away, the Big12 won't take it's place. The ACC is in turmoil over monetary distribution and prominent institutions might bolt. Does that mean that there will only be two major conferences in the future? Do they then break into divisions in an NFL fashion, with an NFL style playoff?
Seems like they had a deadline to bring in San Diego State , that they missed, now it gets harder to hold things together.
Get your popcorn ready, should be interesting watching this unfold.
The top ACC schools would love to bolt for the SEC , or the B1G, but if the GOR wasn't rock solid then TX and 0u would already be in the SEC.
Every year we will see click bait articles about Florida State and Clemson leaving the ACC, but it won't happen until around 2033, at which point the college football landscape may be totally different.
What's in play now isn't the ACC teams, it's the PAC teams, and for the 4 corners schools the BIG12 is the only option, and will also be the only option for Oregon and Washington unless the B1G takes them.

I liked the idea of 4 16 team conferences. Concentrate the top 64 teams in the country in 4 conferences. 16 team conferences can follow a 3-6 schedule model and maintain yearly rivalry games plus an every other year game against the rest of the conference.
Not sure how we'd get there at this point. SEC and Big10 are obviously for 2 of the 4. The ACC could get there as well. The big12 and PAC would have to combine forces to make it happen.
Maybe the ACC and PAC can join to become the Coastal Conference (East and West). They could have local regular seasons and play a championship game for the title.

The way things are going that doesn't seem too far fetched. They could play their conference championship in Houston or Dallas to split the difference.
The problem with this is that big revenue schools will want to band together to increase the amount of league payouts they get. At this point it's obvious that th SEC and the B1G have most of the top revenue schools, and in this day of NIL, transfer portal and ever escalating coaches salaries it will be very different for a school without deep pockets to have any sustained success. So... if most of the top teams are concentrated into 2 conferences, then I don't think that model is particularly attractive to the big schools in the top conferences.
My guess is the post season will be similar to the 2024 format, with perhaps 16.
One change I would like to see is more teams playing in the league championship weekend. Maybe have the #3 vs the #4 ,#5 vs #6 teams in each conference play each other. Those games would be exciting, and useful in choosing the extended playoff teams.
I think you are right, with UT, OU, USC and UCLA all moving the blue bloods were further concentrated in the big 10 and SEC. You certainly couldn't field 2 more conferences with enough power players at this point.
