As I posted earlier, there seems to be a LOT of concern about Mack trying to rally the troops and make another run in '14 as our HC. As I have said countless times before, the hard part was actually getting the boulder moving down the mountain. Once the boulder started moving and the gravitational pull of the situation began to take root, there simply isn't anything that can stop the boulder from rolling down the mountain at this point. That includes winning the conference. That includes winning a BCS game. We are winning games DESPITE Mack Brown. We are winning games because Mack Brown is stepping back and getting out of the way and letting the coaches actually coach. Having said all of that, here are some reasons why Mack Brown will NOT be back in '14.
1. Mack Brown is negatively impacting our recruiting. How you may ask? Because, whether he leaves this year or next season opposing coaches will rightfully so point out that Mack will not be the perspective recruit by the time he graduates. Hell, he won't even be there 2 years from now. At that point, who KNOWS who the Head Coach will be? Furthermore, who knows what type of system that the new coach will run? The system that you may be getting to play in probably won't be the same system that you are committing to play in today. How will that impact your ability to play in the NFL if your talents are not suited to play in a system that a new Head Coach may implement.
2. More on the recruiting front, ANY Head Coach is going to want HIS guys in the system that he is implementing as opposed to the guys from the previous regime. How will THAT impact your ability to even get on the field? If you can't get on the field and get some exposure and film on you then it is damn hard to get into the NFL.
3. I will reiterste, with all of the responsibilities that go with the LHN, our relationship with IMG, our relationship with ESPN, we simply cannot afford to keep Mack Brown around as our Head Football Coach. IMG & ESPN didn't pay the University of Texas a King's ransom for a mediocre or even above average product. The poured cash into our coffers contingent upon success on the football field, basketball court, and baseball diamond. The other day I posted that the LHN needs viewers and advertisers for the LHN to continue to make sense for ESPN. An investment in Nick Saban would pay-off DRAMATICALLY for the LHN, ESPN, & of course the University of Texas. There is a reason Alabama's Chancellor came out and spoke about what a great financial investment Nick Saban is to the University of Alabama. It's because it's the truth! During the KU game, the LHN comprises about 85% of all of the commercials on the Network.
Other sponsors were as follows:
Texas Stadium

I am not a Network guy and don't claim to be one BUT I do understand business. And you can't run a business when all of your commercial air time is being spent on you promoting your own network. If you don't have any viewers out side of the State of Texas watching this network it can be a problem. If you don't have companies buying advertisement slots then you have a larger problem. How long will ESPN & IMG continue to fund the LHN to broadcast an inferior product? I have not read the LHN contract however I am sure there are contingencies and responsibilities both parties must adhere to otherwise the contract could be amended or even potentially terminated. Do you think Steve Patterson is going to give up $15/M per year because of sentimentality towards an outdated Head Football Coach that doesn't want to leave quite yet? Yeah, right..
4. I have touched on this before and earlier in this post: the fact is we are winning games DESPITE Mack Brown. We are winning games because Mack Brown is stepping back and getting out of the way and letting the coaches actually coach the players. Mack actually went to the coaches and told them prior to the OU game, "do whatever you have to do to win the game." He then proceeded to get the Hell out of the way. Do we REALLY need to be paying someone $5.4M/yr to get the Hell out of the way?! Can we afford that? How silly does that look to the kids inside the program that know what is going on? How silly does it sound when these same players are sharing this in bits and pieces to recruits?
5. Mack has been pointing to '13 since our implosion 3 years ago that "you better get on-board now because we are going to be playing for it all in '13!" How do I remember that so well? Because he said it time and time and time again in the aftermath of the '10 season. I also remember it so well because I wanted so desperately to believe it that I DID believe it! What have we learned since then? We know that Mack cannot evaluate talent. Oh, of course there is the RG3 situation. There is the Andrew Luck recruitment. There is the Johnny Manziel situation (head case or not, I would take his ass in a heart beat!). I will cut him some slack on the Jameis Winston recruitment but to not even return a phone call? REALLY?! What jumps out at me is Chris Whaley being the ONLY RB we recruited a few years back because Mack felt that STRONGLY about Whaley being the next Natrone Means. Remember guys like Christine Michael wanting to come to UT that year as well? Well for the only RB we recruited that season, we got ourselves a pretty good DT out of the deal but missed out on a DAMN good RB in the process of keeping a promise. Here's another one for you: do you remember Major having to CONVINCE Mack to take Daje Johnson? Mack didn't want Daje. Think about this team and explosives WITHOUT Daje today for a minute. Yeah, Mack knows how to evaluate player talent alright.
6. Next up, remember the time that Mack had to call around and ask about Defensive Coordinators when replacing Will Muschamp and we ended up with Manny Diaz because he didn't know enough about X's & O's to know any better? I bet you do! Hell, I remember talking to Manny one on one and talking about the spread and how to defend it. The guy gave me a GREAT salesman answer from a 10,000' view however he wouldn't get into specifics. I vividly remember how he AVOIDED talking specifics with me. I let it go because I saw what he had did defending the homogenous offenses of the SEC at Mississippi State but something in the back of my mind always stuck out that this guy is a bit of a wild card. Well I'll be honest with you, I am NOT a Football Coach nor do I play one on TV. HOWEVER, if I was a Head Coach at the University of Texas knocking back $5.4M/yr I wouldn't rely on what other coaches had to say about a guy. I would DAMNED sure know enough about the game that I was paid $5.4M/yr to Coach and be able to call BULL$HIT on a snake oil salesman like Manny Diaz just so I could keep making $5.4M/yr!
7. Need more proof? Here's a blast from the past- how about Larry MacDuff? Hell, I remember talking to 49er fans and asking them about their Special Teams Coordinator Larry McDuff and having them tell me how badly their Special Teams sucked and how happy they were to be rid of the guy! Hell, that's coming from the casual fan but it sure didn't seem like a ringing endorsement to me to name him "Co" Defensive Coordinator AND Linebackers Coach.
8. Deloss Dodds and all of his gravitas is no longer here to protect Mack Brown. There is a new sheriff in town and his name is Steve Patterson. Patterson is going to want to make a name for himself quickly or HIS Honeymoon will be over quicker than Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra's. Patterson is going to want to make a name for himself from the outset. And keeping an underachieving, bloated old coach past his prime like Mack Brown does NOT set the precedent an "up and coming" AD with tons to prove to an impatient Longhorn Nation that he knows what he is doing.
9. Forget about the LHN. Forget about IMG. Forget about ESPN. Think about THIS for a minute: how BADLY will Season Tickets Sales suffer if Mack Brown is back in '14? How badly will contributions to the Athletic Department be? It is a proven fact that when our football team is winning, contributions to the individual Colleges increase as well. How badly will THEY suffer if Mack Brown is back in '14? I don't think that if I am a new AD that is trying to create my own legacy that I would want to find out!
10. There is NOTHING that has happened during this season that has reversed ANY of the dynamics taking place in the State of Texas as it pertains to College Football. If anything, things have gotten worse. A&M has proven they are legit- like it or not! And NOW we are having to deal with an emerging Baylor program. Sorry to be a "buzz-kill" Mack, and I know you don't like it but despite being 5-0 in Conference play (which you point out at every opportunity!) in a down Big 12 we are 6-2 and unranked. Is that why Mack Brown is the 2nd highest paid coach in all of College Football? Are we expected to appreciate the ROI that we are getting for $5.4M/yr? If so, $5.4M/yr doesn't get you much these days! Our biggest win in the past 2 seasons came against the worst OU Team we have seen in 10 years. We are not going to beat Baylor. PERIOD. I doubt we will beat Okie State. We will have our hands full Thanksgiving night with Tech.
In closing, as I have been told time and time again, "with the emergence of the Aggies, Tech, & Baylor, and now you have the SEC recruiting here in Texas as well, we just can't afford to keep Mack Brown. The stakes are just too high! Combine that with the expectations of the LHN, IMG, & ESPN along with a money hungry University and Athletic Department, the demands and commitments are simply to high for us to keep Mack Brown around for another year!"
I couldn't agree more!
