Who: Texas Longhorns 3-5 (2-3) vs Texas Tech Red Raiders 3-5 (1-4)
When: Saturday November 1st, 2014, 6:30PM
Where: Jones AT&T Stadium, Lubbock TX (FS1)
Odds: N/A
The Good:
Both teams have struggled to find the silver lining in their seasons while both enter Saturday's matchup coming off of massive losses. Tech has managed to move the ball a bit on offense and has found a bit of a rushing game in Deandre Washington who has 700 yards rushing and is averaging 5.5 ypc. As always Texas Tech has managed to put up points, but have had to work much harder to do it with a majority of their points coming late in losing efforts. The Tech offense does have a myriad of interesting weapons at wide receiver including Jakeem Grant, Bradley Marquez, Reginald Davis, and Devin Lauderdale who are all threats to score with the ball in their hands. Grant leads the receiving corps with 700 yards and 5 touchdowns and is averaging 13.5 yards per catch.
The Bad:
While both teams suffered embarrassing losses last week, only one team in this game had 82 points put on them. While the Texas defense has shown signs of elite play this season the Tech defense has regressed week by week. Their season started off with close wins over Central Arkansas and UTEP before losing five of their last six games. The Red Raiders defense has allowed an average of 507 yards per game and has struggled to force any turnovers or game changing plays. Starting Quarterback Davis Webb was injured in last week's game which means that Patrick Mahomes will likely get the start on Saturday. The fact that the game is in Lubbock will provide a small boost to the Red Raiders, but breaking in a new starter against a defense that has suffocated better offenses this season isn't a recipe for success. Tech also extended head coach Kliff Kingsbury after last season and look locked into the young head coach for the next few years.
The Uncertain:
It's hard for fans to have any confidence in either teams considering what happened last weekend, and things have a funny way of shaking out in Lubbock during night games. The snapshot on Patrick Mahomes this season hasn't been a big enough sample size to draw any clear conclusions on his play within the offense. Mahomes is 12/23 for 119 yards and touchdown to interception ratio of 2/2 on the campaign so far.
What's at stake:
Both teams are in dire need of a win to keep their bowl hopes alive. Tech has struggled defensively and the Longhorns have not been able to find consistent production on offense this season. A win for either side should provide a small boost, while a loss sends the rest of this season into a downward spiral. Texas Tech still has Oklahoma and Baylor looming large after this game and will need nothing short of a miracle to get bowl eligible.
