QB Update

Earlier in the week, it was said that Texas expected all three quarterbacks to be available this weekend against USC and while that may be true we want to pass along a note that was conveyed to us. 

We learned that while Shane Buechele has been throwing this week, it was said that he was not participating in team work or 11 on 11. Instead Buechele has been throwing off to the side during practice while Sam Ehlinger has continued to work with the first team offense. 

Based on this info we expect Ehlinger will be the quarterback that will run out with the offense in the Coliseum tomorrow night, but like last week expect to see Jerrod Heard in spurts.

Yea I read the same, but if somehow some way Sam and Heard win this game tomorrow evening. It will be really tough for shane to get his spot back. Even if Sam doesn't "play" better than Shane it would prove he has the winning mentality and helps the team more than just throws down the field

I'm still a believer in Shane but if he can't go, he can't go. If Sam wins the job, he's our QB period...until he's not. 

I want Texas to win, it's simple.

respectfully....I disagree.  If the coaches feel that way, then ok. But starting a freshman in an away game of this magnitude just because the fans think so is not a wise course.

Normally, I would agree with you 100%, but I'm not so sure on this.  I don't think Sam is as accurate as Shane, but from the little I saw last week and in the Spring game, it appears Sam processes his reads a little faster than Shane.  I think both are highly competitive and will do anything to win, but Sam is just bigger and adds another element in the QB scramble/elusiveness category that Shane tries to do but he's just below Sam's capability.  

I was all for hopefully not playing Sam this year and giving him a full year.  However, that is out the window now and in my opinion I think Sam gives this team the best chance to win.  Shane also gives this team an opportunity to win, but I just think Sam increases the odds.  Sam will struggle at times, as all freshman do, but he seems to have that intangible of knowing the defense.  I'm not bashing Shane and would be fine with his as the starter, but I cringe every time he gets hit.  No question he is tough, but his body just hasn't caught up with his mental toughness.  These are just my opinions and I could be way wrong and Texas sure isn't calling me for my opinions so it's a moot point.

I don't need advice to form my own opinions.  I've coached HS football for over 20 years and I know players when I see them.  You can make a read on players or form opinions off a game or two.  I stand by my statements that Sam E. gives the Horns slightly better chance to win based on his capabilities and feel for the game.  Some players just have that feel and awareness and I believe Sam has it.  He will make mistakes like tonight, but he will also find a way to get it done.  That's my opinion and like I said, my opinion doesn't matter because I'm not a paid coach on the UT staff.
