Poor Recruiting from Texas?

Mike Finger had an interesting column in the Star Telegram about Texas' recruiting woes - particularly at the quarterback position. They didn't give RG3 a minute of their time (wanted him to play wide receiver) and Andrew Luck and Seth Doege were not heavily recruited either. Each went on to tear up the offenses in their respective schools. Throw in Gilbert, Connor Wood and the 2 guys we have now and we end up with a 5-7 record last year and a 7-5 record this year.

This year was really a "lost year" because we didn't define our starting qb. Very frustrating to say the lease.

I blame the QB mess on the recruitment of Garrett Gilbert. GG was a Gatorade all american and a 5 star recruit out of high school. He was part of a recruiting frenzy and had offers from a lot of top notch programs. The guy could have went any place he wanted. He looked like a can't miss QB. I totally give Texas a pass on this guy, he was a miss but he would have been a miss anywhere he went. Who knew he had such a fragile make up?

He hurt in two ways. One he was a bust and two he stopped any other quality QB from coming to UT. We saw this season that Connor Wood who transfered when he was not going to get playing time. The problem with these guys is they all think they are going to the NFL and college is a stepping stone to the big bucks and glory.

We might see some different teams this coming season. RGIII, Landry and Weeden are all gone as is the guy at Kansas St. UT is doing it the right way, by building a defense and running game. I still think if Fozzy and Brown were healthy, this team wins two more games. No doubt they defeat Mizzou and Kansas St because they nearly beat them with little running game.

I don't know what will happen but the Ft Worth Star Telegram has never been a friend of UT and as for the non-recruitment of RGIII, we were not alone. Who else recruited him and who knew he would be anything other than a run first option QB?

Garret Gilbert ws the best qb on the team this year. Had he started every game we would have had more productivity. Not his fault. Plus the play calling from new OC Harsin has been less than stellar. I agree that next season the qb position will be open for competition. Did you guys see Mack Brown on the sideline yesterday? He has aged 10 years since a few seasons ago. The stress is really apparent on him. Time to get things straight after the bowl game. Texas does not settle for half-ass.
