Ok. I am assuming that all posts regarding us being close to landing saban were accurate. I will also assume that all posts saying Mack had decided to retire we're true. Going through the whole week over and over here is what I can't figure out

Were chips sources pro Mack folks who leaked it knowing Mack would get pissed , the media might support mack and be sympathetic and he might be able to turn it around and save his job or at least kill saban deal Or

Were the sources worried that Mack would stall forever and so by leaking the story they forced the issue out in the open

If the latter why wouldn't they think that all the noise would spook saban

Curious as to your thoughts

You need to read sirhornsalot's posts on the Saban thread.

I think it is the latter. I suspect that once that extension was in Saban's hands the Friday before last, some of the BMDs got antsy and scooped Chip to force Mack's hand. Seems like it backfired, at least as far as getting Mack to step down before Saban signed the extension.

Wasn't BMDs
Look within the university
The common thought is that Chip's source came from within the athletic department; specifically "the highest levels." Patterson? Plonsky? If it was Patterson, it would probably be leaked to speed up the process. If it was Plonsky, maybe it served to paint the University in a negative light, given that her job is rumored to be on the chopping block with a possible consolidation of the men's and women's athletic departments.

OP- i have also been wondering the same regarding the leaks - the only conclusion i can come to is that this is politics/power plays being conducted at a higher level - one camp seeing who can out manouver the other

all in all i am glad with the end result that Mack has resigned - am now keeping my fingers crossed that we get a great coach

would have preferred if the whole situation was more smooth

Whoever was leaking should be fired. If a BMD was leaking, he should be excluded from the program. Any coach or AD needs to be able to trust those permitted on the inside.

Let's not underestimate Patterson's moxy and experience with this. He wasn't brought in to twiddle his thumbs while waiting for a legend to move out only then to be allowed to stand up.

That being said, Mack's exit must not look as though Patterson came in and told Mack to pack up. Just like when any new boss comes in, he's heard a lot about the situation, he knows. It needed to look like this was Mack's decision, for Mack, for Powers and for Patterson. Period.

I truly believe Patterson, knowing how close we were to landing Saban, tightened the screws on Mack with the leak. Pressure was rising and it was looking more and more like Mack was not going to hold true to the conditions of employment HE SET HIMSELF. This gave the AD much needed leverage and support to reference in discussions with Mack.

Knowing this, Saban leaks that he has "agreed" to Bama terms, leading Mack to believe his goal of blocking Saban had been reached. But what was not fully anticipated was the extreme and massive response from practically EVERYONE in burnt orange. Friday night and Saturday morning were vicious and nasty. Voices and opinions were heard, and feelings and threats were felt.

Basically, "Mack, they thought you were gone and that we were getting Saban. Now that Saban is "off the table" they're pissed. We've got to move on."

Mack: "Now the University is once again being pulled in a different direction. It's best I step down."

I believe Mack's retirement leak was just as controlled as Saban's agreeing to extension announcement. The timing is no coincidence.

What's interesting is if Patterson purposefully smoked out some moles in this process while succeeding in the overall goal.

I still think it's Saban.

Exactly. If the BMD want Saban, they will get him.

I hope I'm not completely naive to the situation (based on what we've been told) about Saban. Even with all the "Saban is off" talk, I'm a bit skeptical.

Leaks from in The Belmont were real.......Patterson will take care of this Belmont hire, I would say.

That's a great take. Information leaks are rarely if ever done without an end goal in mind.

I find it hard it believe that Patterson, who has been in office less than 2 weeks, would be involved in a leak campaign against Mack. He barely knows the players to do that. Now if you said it was the BMDs, then I could believe it. What is very disturbing is the possibility that we have an AD that can be so easily influenced by the BMDs or anyone else to engage in this type of behavior. If he is that type of person, we are in a lot of trouble.

I don't know if leak was Patterson but would not be stunned. However I will be stunned if that leak was coordinated with saban and his leak and we end up with saban. I just see no chance that happens. It would have been better for saban I think to have Mack forced out a week earlier than say the things he has said since Saturday night and then come back and take job. Here's hoping tho
