First of all, I love this board. Been a long-time OB lurker with few posts, but really like to geek out on things like recruiting, conference realignment, and of course, the coaching search.

Regarding that: let's not forget what is probably driving most of SP's actions -- unifying the program.

It's fractured right now, and the #1 best example of this to me is the different BMD camps and the candidates they all want to pitch. Then there's the ex-players and the fans in general. As the new kid in town, you don't want to alienate any of the BMDs and their support; involving former players is key; and the general fans are the ones buying season tickets.

So, how do you accomplish this?

Listen to each group and do your due diligence. It's Texas, so you talk to anyone that gives you some sort of advantage and don't waste your time elsewhere.

For example:

You talk to Briles because that's who the ex-players endorse (and he probably deserves an interview anyway). This is a win-win, because if he's that good, you hire him. If he's not your first choice, then you've indirectly sent a message to Texas HS recruits that Briles just wasn't good enough for Texas. Do you want to play for him now?

With Strong, Malzahn and Franklin, you've covered the up-and-comers. Talk to both Harbaughs to cover the NFL aspect (and let's see if they can bring their brother-in-law down to coach BBall!). Talk to Gruden - you have some time.

Then there's Sexton's boys. Both are in position to move as soon as their seasons are done. And for people who think waiting for the MNC game to be over negates Fisher's candidacy, do you really think we're not talking to Sexton about both Saban and Fisher at the same time? The ground work will be done in plenty of time if we want Jimbo, and it appears to already be in place if Saban wants to come.

So, you talk to everybody and then make your decision. At the end of the day, you've involved all of the important aspects of the UT infrastructure and people feel like they've had at least a little input/ownership in the process. Steve should be able to pitch the hire to all of us, and if our guy wasn't selected, we'll understand why and be able to quickly get behind our new coach. The BMDs will hopefully increase donations, the ex-players will be even more involved in the program, and season ticket sales will start to rise again.

My guess is when we hear of Coach X getting an interview, this process might be at the heart of it all. There's more to this hire than just the next football coach - it's healing the entire program and bringing everyone back on the same page.

Sorry for the long post - just had a ton going through my head this morning. Happy New Year Hornsports!

Welcome. I think the product will unify the fan base.

I can't wait for a coach who knows the xs and os of football to lead this team.

Excellent expression of what's at stake and how and why things are proceeding as they are.

Would appear Texas must handle relationships far and wide, same the program does with high schools and coaches all across the state.

We relate to the football landscape in ways few universities do. Guess that goes without saying.

We as a community will all be together after THE "HIRE"......Patterson is working hard for the final product that will bring us all together.

Im pleased he has (thus far) done what needed to be done for the most part. My "litmus test" with Patterson is what he does in the six months AFTER the coaching hire. I want to see a mass reduction in Bellmont bloat.
