After 8 years in SF, I am returning home to my old stomping ground, albeit only for a couple of year. So much development around campus since then I hardly recognize anything.

My major concern is traffic as I hate driving. My new business will be no further than SoCo area. My budget is $1000 max. I was thinking of living near the Parmer Tech Ridge area or off of 2222. Any idea what traffic might be like?

Any other suggestions if closer to downtown area?

Thanks!

You will be hard to find anything close to the city for that price. If you want to be in the heart you might look for a roommate.

Traffic sucks no matter what, but South of Downtown but West of South Congress is your best bet for traffic.

Check out south park meadows/onion creek area. Not sure where you will be working but if you are commuting to downtown SPM and OC would be closer than Tech Ridge. The area is really growing. Tons of new shopping and restaurants and brand new apt complexes opening up all over. Plus tech ridge ain't austin. anything north of 183 is south dallas.

I have no dog in this hunt, have not looked at apartments in Austin since the early 70's. But a good rule of thumb is Lake Austin/Town Lake divides the N/S drive time equation.

If you don't like driving or sitting in traffic for over an hour each way, there is no way you should look north of 2222 and work in South Austin. If you are interested in working downtown or the South Congress area, check the SW Parkway area, 2244 or even Bee Cave Galleria.

I drive 38 miles each way from the far west Lake Travis on 71/2244/360 to north Austin, usually at 60-65 mph and just watch the opposite traffic flow in amazement that anyone would sit in that mess.

Thanks! So key is living east or west. Moving is so overwhelming. I'm so use to walking and taking public transportation.

Absolutely great advice right here.

The east side is the rough side of town. Now there are some areas that are being revitalized like riverside and the old miller airport area where dell childrens hospital is. But most of the apartments on that side of town are really old kind of college kid apartments. Nothing wrong with that but if thats not what your looking for then you have to get to the burbs just a little. I live in Cirlce C area. We have nice apartments easily in your range where I live. Without traffic I can be at DKR in 20 minutes. That same drive in rush hour is an hour at best. You might check out Circle C but I didn't mention it because you seem young and Circle C area is a lot of families and kids.

I will be 32 in a couple of months. Not into living amongst college kids as I am way too old. I'll check out Circle C area. I want to enjoy Austin the next couple years.

I have shoes 32 years old lol!

We live southwest, so I kind of support the Southpark Meadow area near Slaughter and I35. I'm retired, so I don't drive it much at rush hour but it's not that bad IMO. There are alternate routes to downtown via Congress and 1st Street, etc.
