*****Official Texas vs. Cal Game Thread*****

My thoughts now that I've finished throwing up . . .

– I am highly encouraged by the OL play we saw tonight. There were plays when Heard could have sat down and had a sandwich before throwing. Still need more consistency but you can see its coming together.

– Heard. I posted a year ago that he was the real deal. Well, he's the real deal.

– Foreman wasn't getting much early, but there late you could see his power/size becoming a factor.

– Take away those 2 possessions where Heard made some mistakes and we win this game. Not laying it him, or on Rose. But we were so close.

– Daje apparently scared the hell outta Cal's ST's coach. Was disappointed he didn't get a shot there. He did get a punt return shot though.

– The priority for next year's recruiting class, IMO, has become the DL. We need a couple of way above average DT's. Getting Mack would have probably shut me up. But we are in need of a couple of difference makers here.

– The youth continue to showcase the future. I can't say how impressive they are. Connor Williams has a real mean streak. So does Vahe.

– For a secondary playing with two backups at safety, they played well. A few mistakes here and there, a couple were costly. But you get some of that with youth.

– Where is Deandre McNeil? Did he play tonight? We used some TEs – successfully – which only makes me wonder how much more we could have got from someone like him.

So here's one that still pisses me off:

How can you throw Haines out of the game for trying to lead with a shoulder, but accidentally making contact with the head, then later in the game when a Cal player slams Heard to the ground by his face mask, all the Cal player gets is a 15 yd personal foul. I would think, flagrant or not, that level of face mask would warrant ejection way more than Haines hit.

One change we have to make is putting Raulerson at center and putting Doyle on the bench.

Doyle and Flowers both. Flowers had his THIRD personal foul penalty in three games. The mistakes are not being made by C. Williams or P. Vahe, they're being made by the older guys.

What you have to do for next year is get Greg Robinson to come back and take over this defense. Bedford has to go...... just like Watson as OC......Charlie has to pull that string or he will lose his job very soon.

A couple more thoughts.

1-Kai Locksley is listed on the participation report. Wonder where he was utilized? Special teams or WR?

2-Locke actually did some good things at safety. Not a bad night for a true freshman getting that many reps.

3-It's very interesting what we are doing with the JUCO OL. It seems pretty obvious to me that the plan is to RS those guys. Strong and the coaching staff have no problem throwing guys into the fire, and these guys aren't getting any reps.

There is no provision in the facemask rule for an ejection, as far as I know.

As much as I was upset with Rose missing that extra point I can't blame the guy for the close loss. We had opportunities to take Cal out of the game but we didn't. When were up 24-10 and had the ball we should kept the momentum going. But this team has a lot of fight and I wouldn't be surprised if this loss was an awakening of some sort to give this hope that we can play with anyone. To be quite honest TCU and Baylor doesn't stand out to me I believe we can play with those boys.

Sorry Hookemfan91, but Baylor and TCU are ranked for a reason. Sure they don't look unbeatable at times, but remember they WILL bring their A game against Texas. Unfortunately it doesn't take an A game to beat a Bedford defense. Sure with Heard healthy we can score and make a game of it against a lot of teams, but we can't beat them.  OU will tear us a new one as well. They were dominating us last year until they let up and we made a game of it. DOn't expect them to make that same mistake. Heard gives us a chance to be in the game, but Bedford guarantees us a loss to the Sooners. Now that teams really know what Heard can do they will probably put a spy on him or adjust their defense to limit his effectiveness. Not to mention all they have to do is try to hurt him with  cheap shot and its back to Swoopes. The Cal kid nearly did that last night. With Bedford running this defense we will go 3-9....if we can outscore ISU and Kansas. I know its a bleak outlook, but its reality. OU weekend will suck again.........but I sat THROUGH 60 minutes of Mack Brown ass kickings and will sit through this one too supporting the players....But I will not support coaches who do not belong coaching THE TEXAS LONGHORNS. Charlie better hand out some pick slips very soon, before he gets one himself. He is the right guy to fix this, but he needs assistants who can coach, and not just babble at a microphone.
