Y'all-
Earlier yesterday I was bored to death and decided to post some of my observations from the day in College Football. After watching Football into early into this AM, I couldn't help but notice other things as well. On to those additional observations:
1. Gary Patterson was completely "geeked-up" for that game last night against the Horns. After the comments about him "being an actual Football Coach, not some guy that shows up at the end of practice with his gold watch" I was interested to see how demonstrative he would be on the sidelines and he did not disappoint! For those folks that were interested in having Patterson as a viable candidate to replace Mack, let me just say NO THANKS! The guy was an emotional idiot on the sidelines not only with his players, but his coaches as well. Say what you want about Mack but over the past 15 years I have NEVER seen Mack berate players or coaches on National TV. Patterson has NOWHERE NEAR the image for a Head Coach the University of Texas wants to associate its brand with. For the record, Gary Patterson is hardly the only coach to show his lack of composure on National TV yesterday. More on that later in this post.
2. Say what you want about Aggy, but Texas A&M is getting FAR more coverage and exposure to potential recruits and students than the University of Texas is (even with its own network!). What those folks that support Mack don't understand is that there has indeed been a paradigm shift in Texas Football. The benchmark is no longer OU but is instead A&M! If we stand-pat with Mack for another season, the task of rebuiilding this program becomes more daunting. We would fall further behind in the arms race with Aggy for recruits and resources. Change is coming not for the sake of change, but instead because it is necesary to remain relevant.
3. Pellini is an emotional, freaking idiot. I understand that football is played with emotion but someone needs to be an unemotional, detached surgeon on the sidelines (to a degree). Why ANY kid from the State of Texas would want to play for that guy is beyond me.
4. Mike Stoops is a emotional, freaking idiot as well.
5. Speaking of Stoops, OU STILL may make a serious run at winning the Big 12 yet again- we will learn more about their fate this week against Baylor. But I still stand by my observation yesterday that OU has 3 more losses in them. Take a look at OU because I think they are further behind us in the Coach Life Cycle than we are. What I mean is OU today under Stoops no longer resembles the OU of yesterday under Stoops. With the losing out on top recruits and the diminished role of OU on the Collegiate Football landscape, eventually they are going to have to re-evaluate where they are as a program and where they want to be.
6. Is there any Conference that is more self-promoting and over-rated from top to bottom than the SEC? Mizzou being a power? REALLY? Are we talking about the Missouri Tigers coached by Gary Pinkel? As someone has posted on numerous times, how can a conference that takes in 2 mid-level performers from the Big 12 (Aggy & Mizzou) and have those teams immediately emerge as top contenders in the SEC be all that good any way? I have said it before and I will say it again, "the up-tempo, spread offenses of the Big 12 are tough to defend and will make ANY defense look silly!" Ask Kirby Smart if you don't believe me.
7. I really do like Art Briles as a replacement to Mack if Saban or Meyer don't work out. Like many of you, I am not thrilled about bringing in a NFL Coach (however I could warm quickly to Gruden or Tomlin!). I like putting a team away early with the throttle wide-open on offense the way his teams of recent do. The guy knows the State of Texas and can relate to the Texas High School coaches (however I've been told he's pissed a lot of them off as well!)
8. Oregon's offense may sputter but eventually it EXPLODES! Defensively I don't see much. Never have been a big Nick Alioti fan but that offense makes up for a lot of deficiencies on defense.
9. I was watching on the Longhorn Network Mack talking to the team in the locker room after the OU game and Miss Sally was standing behind Mack. REALLY? In the freaking locker room?!
10. I really don't know what to think about Swoopes being inserted into the game last night. Why not earlier in the season? Why at all? I just don't know what to make of it other than the fact that Mack is "going for broke" to win the Conference this season. And to be honest, if I were in his shoes thinking that the only possibility of me returning for '14 is to make sure that I have a viable back-up when/if Case sputters.
11. Good to see Marcus Johnson emerge as a deep threat in the receiving corp. I also am glad to see that we are continuing to run the ball with Brown, Daje, & Gray. I still don't know why Overstreet isn't inserted however I suspect it has to deal with locker room issues. Nevertheless, for the first time in 4 years we have an identity on offense.
12. Mack HAS to wonder what could have been had he replaced Diaz last December. Coaching matters and Robinson can flat-out coach. I really don't recognize these guys on that side of the ball right now. Great job!
13. Replacing programs like Nebraska, A&M, Colorado, & Mizzou with TCU and West Virginia is an epic failure. Like it or not, the Conference is a shadow of what it once was.
14. Perhaps Oliver Luck is just the guy to get us out of this chicken $hit conference and into the ACC or dare I say, the SEC? Probably not the SEC but the ACC would be a Home Run.
15. For those of you wanting Texas in the PAC 12, last night is a perfect example of why Texas to the PAC 12 wouldn't work. Who in the Hell wants to stay up to see a 9:30 PM kick-off in Pullman, WA? Not me. After staying up last night I feel like I'm hung-over today. NO THANKS!
That's all I got. Expect to see the Bellmont Brood come on to OB more and more as long as these wins keep coming. Don't be distraught. The boulder is already rolling down the hill. Getting that boulder moving was the hard part. Too much rolling of the boulder at this point to slow it down. Nevertheless, they won't give up- they have too much to lose (namely access to the program!).
Have a great week and Beat the Hell outta the Jayhawks!
