Observations from Charlie Strongs 1st practice...

Look let me be clear that I am not a fan of the t-shirt Olympics in football practice. Texas got out there today and was I jerseys, shorts and helmets. There is not a lot that you can learn from that but below are ten observations I made while they allowed the media to watch practice for 30 minutes. Of course, it's not a lot but I thought I would pass it along.

1. When the media was allowed on the field “Rack City†by TYGA was blaring on the speakers.

2. The roster looks so small because a whole class of players is missing from what will be there in August.

3. I love the fact Charlie Strong walks practice and while I’m sure he will spend a ton of time with the defense he hits all levels.

4. The roster that was handed to the media listed Malcom Brown at 320 lbs. If he can play with that, he could end up playing on a Casey Hampton and Shaun Rogers level.

5. All eyeball test team is David Ash, Cedric Reed and John Harris. For some reason I’ve never liked the number 14 on a QB (sorry Dan Fouts) but Ash makes it look good.

6. Johnathan Gray was in jersey, shorts and helmets but was in his Texas issue Nikes as was Sheroid Evans and Tevin Jackson.

7. WR coach Les Koenig is all about the details and because he is new and trying to get everyone in the right framework to work, he’s giving the business to every single player. Sometimes in the past, the coaches didn’t coach up the starters or stars on technique during practice because they were expected to “show up†on Saturday.

8. Marcus Johnson looks really good and expectations are huge for him. Montrel Meander looks good in his #88 too.

9. Shawn Watson is drill heavy and if there is one group that needs drills more than anything else, it is the QB and especially Swoopes and Heard, who of course won’t be here until June.

10. I just did not get to see enough in 30 minutes of practice to learn anything about the one thing that is most important for this team – ATTITUDE. We may have to wait for fall Saturday’s to understand that.

Bonus - I was driving to practice and saw the players walking up the hill to cross Red River to get to practice. I don't think this can be long term but it is a great message to send initially that there is work to be done and stuff to earn. Some teams have to learn how to practice and maybe, just maybe, this is Charlie Strong's was of helping that notion.

my son just walked around the corner and I sacked him for a seven yard loss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was always puzzled by the fact that physically fit players needed to be bussed to practice. I walked all over that campus as a student, but football players cannot. What the heck did Mack think he was coaching?

Hook 'em, Charlie!

A music update and who looks best in their uniforms....this is vintage Adams (when there's nothing of substance to learn).

I was thinking the same thing!

1. When the media was allowed on the field “Rack City” by TYGA was blaring on the speakers.

**Thats not "nice" at all. I like it.

2. The roster looks so small because a whole class of players is missing from what will be there in August.

**Not that it'll hurt anyone to get in some extra work. Shame Heard couldnt get in early

3. I love the fact Charlie Strong walks practice and while I’m sure he will spend a ton of time with the defense he hits all levels.

**Enough can't be said for this

4. The roster that was handed to the media listed Malcom Brown at 320 lbs. If he can play with that, he could end up playing on a Casey Hampton and Shaun Rogers level.

**Of any player on the defensive side of the ball, the one who benefits most from Coach Strong is Brown. He might end up a 1st team All American

5. All eyeball test team is David Ash, Cedric Reed and John Harris. For some reason I’ve never liked the number 14 on a QB (sorry Dan Fouts) but Ash makes it look good.

**Hate to think the "dice roll" won't come until after kick off against North Texas

6. Johnathan Gray was in jersey, shorts and helmets but was in his Texas issue Nikes as was Sheroid Evans and Tevin Jackson.

**Hope he does not rush back.

7. WR coach Les Koenig is all about the details and because he is new and trying to get everyone in the right framework to work, he’s giving the business to every single player. Sometimes in the past, the coaches didn’t coach up the starters or stars on technique during practice because they were expected to “show up” on Saturday.

**Wonder who emerges behind Johnson, Shipley, and Sanders

8. Marcus Johnson looks really good and expectations are huge for him. Montrel Meander looks good in his #88 too.

**His speed in the slot would be impossible for all but the elite Big 12 LBs to cover

9. Shawn Watson is drill heavy and if there is one group that needs drills more than anything else, it is the QB and especially Swoopes and Heard, who of course won’t be here until June.

**Worked with Bridgewater.

**Wouldn't think you'd survive long with Strong and Moorer if you didn't have "it".

But did we hire a DJ? That's what's really important now.

Strong on offense play calling:

"I don't think it will ever been an issue because those two guys have been around too long for the egos. I'm not going to put up with it and they know that. We're not here for ourselves, we're here for these players and if you have an ego you're working at the wrong place. Check your ego at the door and let's get going around here. We're here to win and get these young men graduated."

+1

maybe the HC wanted to ride.

Mad Dog as well.

Heck, Bennie should have put Mad Dog in the John Deere and have the OL and DL take turns pushing him up the hill (if you recall the early workouts).
