Look let me be clear that I am not a fan of the t-shirt Olympics in football practice. Texas got out there today and was I jerseys, shorts and helmets. There is not a lot that you can learn from that but below are ten observations I made while they allowed the media to watch practice for 30 minutes. Of course, it's not a lot but I thought I would pass it along.
1. When the media was allowed on the field “Rack City†by TYGA was blaring on the speakers.
2. The roster looks so small because a whole class of players is missing from what will be there in August.
3. I love the fact Charlie Strong walks practice and while I’m sure he will spend a ton of time with the defense he hits all levels.
4. The roster that was handed to the media listed Malcom Brown at 320 lbs. If he can play with that, he could end up playing on a Casey Hampton and Shaun Rogers level.
5. All eyeball test team is David Ash, Cedric Reed and John Harris. For some reason I’ve never liked the number 14 on a QB (sorry Dan Fouts) but Ash makes it look good.
6. Johnathan Gray was in jersey, shorts and helmets but was in his Texas issue Nikes as was Sheroid Evans and Tevin Jackson.
7. WR coach Les Koenig is all about the details and because he is new and trying to get everyone in the right framework to work, he’s giving the business to every single player. Sometimes in the past, the coaches didn’t coach up the starters or stars on technique during practice because they were expected to “show up†on Saturday.
8. Marcus Johnson looks really good and expectations are huge for him. Montrel Meander looks good in his #88 too.
9. Shawn Watson is drill heavy and if there is one group that needs drills more than anything else, it is the QB and especially Swoopes and Heard, who of course won’t be here until June.
10. I just did not get to see enough in 30 minutes of practice to learn anything about the one thing that is most important for this team – ATTITUDE. We may have to wait for fall Saturday’s to understand that.
