Horn Sports, what needs to be let go of is the constant backbiting and back and forth bickering between posters. Randolf Duke's last post is full of ideas that are very worthy of discussion. Personally, I would like to see a lot more of THAT kind of discussion. If you want to be helpful, police the bickering, but not the valid content. Please note the winky smiley!
If I can find it, many years ago I did some perspective drawings of a concept proposal for a combined boathouse and cafe down on what was then Town Lake for an organization, I think called Texas Rowing, that then had the city concession for rowing. It was proposed for a location upstream a bit from Austin High School. Seems like downstream would be a better idea today. I will see if I can find a copy of one of the drawings, scan it and post it . It was printed on grey card stock, so I do not make any promises - not sure how well it will scan. That is not important anyway ... what is important is the discussion.
Here is an image of the boathouse that I mentioned. This is just a concept image. It was intended to be placed on the north side of Lady Bird Lake and accessed East of I-35 and West of Austin High School, close to where the Texas Rowing Center is currently located. The location was not set, hence the non-descriptive tree lined location. It was not pursued because it was estimated that it would have taken $80,000.00 to get utilities down to it. Nobody was interested in paying for it. Also, back then, there was intense antagonism against any attempts to develop anything along the lake front. With the recent development of the old power plant, the new board walk, and the impending deluge of development that will occur as a result of the completion of the Waller Creek tunnel, I could see a facility for UT involvement in rowing as Duke describes being located close to Waller Creek. Of course, it would probably look different, but it would be closer to UT and to the proposed light rail bridge over Lady Bird Lake ... just food for thought.
