New Head Coach and money...

First of all...I'm new to this board, so thanks for letting me participate and read many of the great opinions here..

I have a couple of questions about our coaching search with regards to money...

1. Patterson was quoted, I think, as saying he did not want to break the pay scale of college head coaches. Did I recall that correctly? And if I did, won't that eliminate guys like Saban, both Harbaughs and Gruden? My presumption is that to get any of them, you'd have to pay pretty significant money. Is Patterson just blowing the proverbial smoke about that, or should this be a real concern? Would there be issues with getting such a potentially large contract approved by the university?

2. I question how you make the money work for Briles or Fisher. Both are in the $4m + range. With other incentives and possibly deals, maybe even closer to $5m now. Would either of these guys move from their circumstances for $1m raise? If you go more than that, does either one of these guys make any sense at all? Briles may be an offensive genius and Fisher may be a resurrection specialist, but are either really worth the top spot in contract status in CFB?

3. It's my contention that staff budgets would mean far more to Briles, Saban, Mora, Fisher and any other college HC than it would for NFL guys. Am I wrong to assume this? I wonder if staff contracts are the vehicle we use to get the head coach we want.

4. As the CFB leader in revenues, what sort of defined parameters do we follow for the use of those dollars? I'm curious if we are padding an already lush bank account, or if like most beaurocracies, there is a need to spend or lose. Anyone who could provide insight on this?

Thanks again. Happy New Year to all.

That is called NOT tipping your hand. Pay no attention to what Ptterson says. He is putting up smokescreens. If he pays alot he will say it was an investment.

Welcome to HS Ellie44! I also agree that Patterson is just putting up the smokescreen.

Welcome to HS...

If I ever read the words "smokescreen" "best job in college football" "we're the Jones'" or "BMD" again it will be too soon! Can't wait till we find our new coach.

Good write up Ellie, welcome to the board. I hope those aren't real concerns. But that's big salaries we are discussing from a public institution so they very well could be real concerns.

Welcome. Sure, he may not be "looking to set a new bar in coaching salaries," but he will do what he has to do.

Ellie44 welcome to Hornsports and the money being talked about is what it is going to take for the TOP TIER of Coaches. Will not have a factor on the next tier of coaches.

I believe what Patterson said, paraphrased of course, was something like "just because Texas has infinite resources doesn't mean we have to expend all of those resources on a head coach."

Let's start with some background. Here is a site that breaks down revenues and expenses for every NCAA school, by individual sport (so you know I'm not just making up numbers):

http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/GetOneInstitutionData.aspx

For the year ending Aug 31, 2013, Texas football generated over $109million in revenue and realized $27.6 million in expenses. The University of Alabama ran up almost $41million in football expenses. Obviously, if Texas wanted to pay an incremental $4.5mil to bump our head coach to $10mil/yr, we could and we would still be blow what other programs spend on their football programs. The money for UT athletics is not subject to appropriation by the legislature, so the public interest in the matter is limited. Getting the contract approved by the BOR would not be an issue.

Feel free to offer any additional questions you might have.
