New Face, New Era: Tom Herman To Texas (By: Daniel Seahorn)

I guess I agree with this but I also understand the objection.

Strong inherited an 8 win team (the prior season); Herman is inheriting a 5 win team.

How do we know they are so talented; high school recruiting rankings?  They can't tackle or pass block - does that suggest something to the level of talent?  Furthermore, Mack Brown was the king of the recruiting rankings.... even in many of his down years, they were still "highly ranked."

At the end of the day, Daniel is correct based on his assessment of the QB position.  That is largely what got Mack Brown fired (he said so on an ESPN telecast) and it made winning improbable for Strong most of his time here.  This by itself gives Herman an easier road than Strong had.
Good post right here.

When you have a 5-7 team that lost to freaking Kansas, I think it's fair to question the talent level coming back next year.

So, like 83Dee, I'm agreeing but I'm also understanding the objection.

I think we have given the players a pass the last couple of years.  They never really showed any real enthusiasm when they knew they were playing for Strong's job.  I personally would have set most of them the second half of the Kansas game.  I hope Herman's promise to "make them earn their position" (something to that effect) is true.

"Just look at the depth chart. Texas' underclassmen have accumulated 109 starts on offense and 112 starts on defense in the past two years. "

i don't have the numbers for when strong took over.  he definitely didn't have a experienced qb.
It amuses me that you'd reference the "CNN of sports journalism" as a reliable source.

But, you're a certified Strong apologist. Carry on

you asked for metrics.  there's some metrics for you.  yes, i supported strong while he was here.  i now support herman.  but i'm not blind to the situation that strong inherited and the one that herman is inheriting.

No offense Rotty but I read this as:

"Strong wasnt successful because Mack Brown destroyed the talent on this team." and "Herman will be successful because Strong built this team up."

Yet Strong's best defense was with Mack players his first year.  The following 2 years the defense was always 100+ in FBS.

Our DL was never a force under Strong the way it was his first year.  Poona was probably the best player recruited by Strong but he hardly compares to a Maclolm Brown or Hassan Ridegway.

I realize Strong said this team will win 10 games next year.  How convenient, right?  When your job is knowingly on the line.  Just remember, Strong also said Texas would not lose 6 games ever again after his first season.

A team that lost to Kansas and then Strong says this team will be competing for a Championship is wrong on so many levels.  Maybe it will but not under Strong that was for sure.

6-7, 5-7, and 5-7

I think when people talk about the cupboard being bare is not to say that there was zero talent, but more along the lines of the talent being senior heavy and not much younger talent. Mack admitted that his recruiting/handling of the qb position cost him his job. Well guess who inhereted that? The OL had no depth and questionable starting talent. Espinoza and Ash were lost 1 game into Charlie's tenure and he had to go out and recruit the talent at those critical positions. In the end Charlie didn't get the job done and he needed to be dismissed, but let's not pretend that he had a roster that was loaded and expected to compete for conference championships immediately.

While I agree Mack choosing Swoopes over JT Barrett was a mistake, without question.

The problem I have is everyone assumes the negative for Coach Brown and assumes the positive for Coach Strong.

So when Mack's player delivered a top 25 defense under Strong it was because they were talentless seniors but guided by the graceful God Strong.

When Strong delivers a dismal 110+ ranked defense the last 2 years it was because they talent rich freshmen or sophomores.

SMH

Do you believe Levine left herman with a full cupboard of talent?

I heard this same argument as to why J. Gray should be starting over Foreman last year.  He was a senior blah blah, and its his leadership.  Sorry but that is utter bullshit and Foreman showed it this year, hell he showed it last year when he was averaging twice as many yards per carry than Gray was.  Hell I was banned for expressing this view over on BON and caught so much flack for saying Gray was overrated.  Why did Charlie start the overrated Gray?  Mystifying

Strong inherited some talent. But, that talent didn't not stay long after he arrived.

That doesnt answer the question.  Did Herman inherit a bare cupboard as well from Levine?

He managed just fine his 2 years at UH.

The point I am trying to make is Strong isnt the coaching genius people make him out to be.

I can point to games where the team was unmotivated, flat, mistake after mistake, halftime adjustments, keeping Watson through the off season only to fire him after the fist game in 2015, the list goes on and on.

He benefited from Bridgewater at Louisville but his team here was so poorly coached it was obvious.

It is always either a talent-less Mack roster or talent rich youth.  Funny Herman never had this presumption.

I truly hope Herman instills some responsibility and motivation into these players.  Strong sure didnt.

Well, I wasn't trying to answer any question. I will say I expected a bit more from the Horns this year while thinking they were still a year away. I agree that Strong has been a let down for me. Was it scheme or skill? Scheme has stunk on several occasions as has skill. Scheme is on the coaches but so is skill to a degree.  Loved the cultural change but not the performance on the field.

See I might be reading too much into this but during the presser yesterday I was trying to figure out why Herman thinks this team wasnt as successful as it should be.

I came away:

"Winning is hard."

"TLC has to be earned"

"This wont be camp Texas"

"Carry on the pride of so many great players that have worn this uniform"

So my assumption is Herman believes this team is soft and unmotivated.  Just my opinion.

I heard the same thing after Mack.

The thing that baffles me about Strong's tenure is that just about everyone from message boards to respected college football analysts have no answer as to why things didn't work out for Charlie. Answer always starts with "I don't know" and a lot of blah blah blah afterwards. I know I don't have a solid answer. I'm just hoping Herman brings some positive mojo with him. We need to turn this thing around in a hurry.

if my statement implied that herman will be successful, then let me clarify.  it is yet to be determined whether herman will be successful or not.  however, he does have a very experience set of players coming back to play for him, per that article.  including a qb and depth at OL.  if i recall correctly, strong's first year, the OL, after espinosa went down and some were removed from the team, was inexperienced; some making their first starts.

if i had to choose which situation i would like to inherit.  give me the current.

Yes, you are correct these players have gained one game of experience (blowout loss to TCU) since losing to KANSAS.  Kansas is a reset button and a HC job crusher.

The OL players I agree.  Hughes and Flowers were nothing short of terrible.

6 turnovers in one game is a feat for any defense to overcome.  in the last 3 losses, the defense played pretty decent considering.  the offense didn't produce.  there were many chances in the wv game for the offense to put the game out of reach but couldn't do it.  it seemed like in both the wv and tcu games, we were just sticking around and not trying to put teams away.

Which is baffling to hear. Not because I think he's wrong but more because it's hard to believe. It's not as if Strong is known for a laid back camp. When he was hired, all we heard about was the hardcore regimen our team was about to be run through. That's not even talking about the pit. The pit was notorious. Yet this isn't the first time we're hearing claims about the team being soft. It makes me wonder if soft is meant more mentally than physically for this group. They've not been slow to express how they're doing emotionally over the past two years.

I don't think of guys like Brandon Jones, Kris Boyd and Davante Davis and think soft. The first class Strong was recruited was full of "killers."Far from soft. Yet that seems to be our identity. All that said, Herman said he hadn't even evaluated our roster yet, so we could be jumping the gun.

I don't think "metrics" means what you think it does, Rotty.

All that lame ESPN article had is a list of young players who are supposed to be All-Americans. The only one I'd list as irreplaceable is Connor Williams right now.

I think there may be something to this team being soft mentally.

Pretty much every week in Ryan's film review, you could see blown assignments and just plain old lack of execution. Those are mental mistakes not physical.

It was just my take on his presser.

Herman also mentioned something to the effect "any championship at any level he has never heard....we won with finesse. It is won with physical and mental toughness" - paraphrased.

He also mentioned his first talk with players and what his expectations are.  He told the team "Winning is hard."  Why did he tell our players that?  Seems like an obvious statement but maybe he doesnt think they have worked hard enough.

While he said he had not evaluated the roster he had watched some games.  I wonder if he watched Kansas.  I bet he did.

Here is another interesting take on Herman.  Listen from about 9:30 until the end.

I might be jumping the gun, like I mentioned earlier, its just my take on what he said.
