National Signing Day 2016 Thread

Coming off a 5-7 campaign, you'd better be happy with 8-4. Expecting more smells like entitlement.

 
I think entitlement will always exsist somewhat, however i think all of our players are clearly hungry to to show the world they are to be taken serious. 5-7 still stings those that were there last season and anyone coming on board does not want to to hear i told you so.

I only saw us lay down once last year (TCU), one game we severely underestimated the opponent (iowa St), and one game we flat weren't ready (ND). Flip the Cal, OK ST, and TT games (7 total pts) and we are an 8 win team. I am going to call 10 wins next year (regular season), final answer, lock it in, and throwing it in my face if I'm wrong. I'm not wishing I truly believe that will be the case. I say it's a disappointing season if we win less than 10. #webeatnerrbody

I like this. 10 wins, yes.

Here's a little math or common sense about it.

Very hard for teams to go undefeated. Few years ago I kept an eye on it, and even looked back a ways. The odds at that time (early 2000s) was that hardly ever would 3 teams go undefeated. Sometimes two. Usually it turns out just one.

That's going back a ways, too.

So... one loss is average for all best of the best teams. Not counting a conference title games, that's 11-1. Hard to do. Baylor and TCU both did it a year ago, then last year failed in the effort.

One year in the Big 12, in 2008, three teams went 11-1. Texas, OU, and Texas Tech. We know how that went.

In the SEC due to conference division matchups that rotate ever so slowly, you end up playing four pansy NC games, 6 in your own division and two from the other division which may not even be competitive. For that reason, their west division came up with three one-loss teams a couple of seasons ago. Factoring in the SEC East, they had 6 teams with 2 losses or less. Due to the balance of the intra-conference/cross-division scheduling. I think it was Florida, Georgia and S. Carolina who had the good records in the sec east. Alabama, Auburn, LSU in the west. (or was that aggy's only good year?)

Now look at 2 losses. That's probably the average for highly competitive teams that just don't hit the home-and-road schedule right for that season, or a key QB injury away from a win, or some such. 10-2 going into a conference title game or on to a big bowl game. 11-1 is great because its one loss shy of a perfect season -- which has prove rare. Only one or two at the most annually. Seldom three.

10-2 would be the mark to aim for no lower than that. With great games and statement wins. Fighting for 11-1 and an undefeated season.

That said, 9-3 regular season is not a bad year, just a disappointing year.

Nothing below 9 wins should be the cardinal rule.

This team and the 2015 and 2016 classe,s and the remaining upper classmen, and all the fans, deserve 10 wins!

I think so. That benchmark would be satisfying, and staying hungry.

You always aim for an undefeated season. That should be every teams goal. I think we look at 9 wins or more with a predominantly under classmen team and feel really good about where this team is heading. I think most here would say I'm one of the most devout Strong supporters on this board but I would be disappointed with anything less than 8 wins and mildly disappointed with anything less than 9. My hope is 10 and a conference.

 
I think 10 wins is your standard for next year.

I think it all hinges on the idea that Gilbert's offense is going to produce results. And given that it does, we'll have a much more successful defense overall. 

Let's look at the schedule . . . 

1. Notre Dame – Win. We're at home. Notre Dame lost a lot to graduation. We have a nasty taste in our mouth from last year. This win sets the tone for the season

2. UTEP – Going away win.

3. @ Cal – Lost tons to graduation, particularly that QB. We win easily.

4. @ OSU – Wild one in Stillwater. Texas has two weeks to prepare for this one. I like our chances.

5. OU – IMO, the talent gap between Texas and OU has become obvious. Their best would be average in our last two recruiting classes. We out tough them, we out coach them, we out play them. Anyone remember what Tulsa did to OU's defense last year?

6. Iowa St – Cyclones should be an easy win.

7. @ K State – The talent gap between us is glaring. KSU once made up for this with their coaching advantage. They no longer have that.

8. Baylor – Baylor will want some payback. We won't be helpless on offense this time around and neither will they. This could be a L, but could be a W. 

9. @ Tech – This game scares me. If there's a game that we've come to respect, it's Lubbock at night.

10. W Virginia – We should win this one.

11. @ Kansas – We should easily win this one.

12. TCU – One of three possible L's on this schedule, IMO. However, I think we have an advantage. We're not out-talented so much this time. We're at home. Something will be at stake.

I see 3 possible Ls on the schedule, but I don't see all three happening, but maybe two of the three.

Does anyone remember the Dallas Cowboys in 1990-91 during the Jimmy Johnson era? This was the year prior to the first Super Bowl appearance with Jimmy. Even Ditka knew after playing Dallas that something special was coming.

Thats the same feeling I have right now. We're about to witness something special. This may be that year before THE YEAR, we'll see.

To me "entitlement" is when someone believes they are owed something or should get something without actually doing anything to earn it. I am talking about savages, a fierce, uncivilized, violent people who take what they want by force. These savages are going to take 10 wins next year.

Placement of games (when we play whom) and the home-road aspects of the schedule favor 10 wins.

Have to start "strong" and build on a win over ND.

 
In an earlier post I'd mentioned that at Louisville, over four recruiting classes, Charlie managed all of 12 4-Star recruits. And that this year he'd come up with 12.  I see now that 247Sports has put that number at 10. They have also adjusted Texas' place down below #10 and adjusted the top classes as well. Have no idea what they are doing. Maybe they don't either.

SI.com calls it 15 4-Star recruits, and one 5-Star, which should be Brandon Jones as they call that the top recruit in the class. See video at the end of this.

SI gives Texas the #8 spot in class ranking.

Going by them, Texas this season got more 4-star recruits in all of Charlie's four classes at Louisville. Twenty-five percent more.

His final year at Louisville put 3 first round picks in the NFL and a few more in other rounds. Think there were 6 drafted in that class. Word lately is that between 6 and 9 players in Texas 2015 class are on NFL radar for the future. This year's class should be that or more.

Starting to see things I was not aware of in player evaluation and development, regards Charlie.

Really need 10 wins this season to establish real momentum and foundation that firmly sets the tone from now on.

I see this class with the potential of the 2005 senior class of Stoddard and Co. Vince was a year behind as I recall. This team is moving into that kind of position -- once it gets the QB and offense in place. The specific talent, by position, of this class is just amazing.

I'm reading some spine-tingling write-ups (plus video reports) on all the players that signed, including ones that committed earlier and weren't in the final day'sactivity.

Keep an eye out on a particular Defensive End... one Andrew Fitzgerald... he's was not in the big day's news. But watch out!

I can only say... we're about to see some serious...

You and I are talking about two different things. I'm not talking about the players. I'm talking about UT's fans who mistakenly confuse what the UT team does with what they do. Humility is a tough thing to swallow, especially if you also put too much stock in what some high school kid did last year as a 17 year old. Oh yeah, remember that those other teams' players are also on scholarship. They deserve more respect.

"Oh yeah, remember that those other teams' players are also on scholarship. They deserve more respect" kinda taste like entitlement. Remember that scholarship pays for college it doesn't "entitle" the player to anything else. Respect must be earned. Btw to say our team is going to take 10 wins is not being disrespectful to the other teams kids
