Motion Sickness Patch

Dramamine has never worked. Has anyone used the RX motion sickness patch? If so, does it work? I have a high deductible so am debating if I should ask my doctor tomorrow for a RX. I need this for my upcoming trip. My beach vacations end up in multiple episodes of throw-up and constant nausea from water activities.

It worked for me - in 4-6 waves. The drawbacks to scopolamine are dry mouth and drowsiness.

One patch, the night before, is plenty. Don't do two of them.

Thanks Doc! What do you mean by " 4-6 waves?"

Swells

If you are concerned about being in a boat in the ocean/Gulf, the rolling swells are usually what gets you. I hate them, that's why I fish in the bays in my kayaks. :D

watch the weather report of coastal TV stations and most will give the "seas". 3-5, 4-6 ft swells, that kind of thing. the bigger, the worse they are. 8-10, don't even bother going out.

the scopalomine patch is God's greatest invention. i spent 7 years at UT's Marine Science Institute, and was constantly prone to seasickness. its not fair for a budding marine biologist with no damn money should be prone to sea sickness, but i was prone. big time.

i tried every f'ng thing known to man for the "mal du mer". dramamine, dramamine-D, buclidine, buclidine D, marazine, maraizine D, pickle juice, crackers, 7 up, eating, not eating. nothing worked. finally, after i left the coast, i discovered that God had invented the scopalomine patch. the miracle cure. don't leave home without it.

I feel for you. My mom gets sick, but I seem to be immune. I can ride on the tower of a reasonably small gulf fishing boat in the largest swells and have a great time, but for anyone that gets seasick it is misery. Are you staying in the States or heading out?

Have a wonderful time!

slim, did you work in Port A?

Thanks! I am heading to Koh Samui in May. Renting a boat and touring other small islands around Koh Samui. Getting all my annual check ups completed tomorrow and hoarding whatever medication is needed prior to trip.

Flying malaysia airlines ?? :)

The patch does work, but will make you pretty sleepy. I have gotten sick while on the patch however. I am prone to seasickness in rougher waters (i..e. The Gulf) and everyone has their preferred solution. A lot of it is mental, I personally believe. For me, I will take one Bonine the night before, then a half the next morning when I get on board. I also take a Pepcid AC, as the reflux is what really makes me queasy. That has worked for me, and I am less drowsy. But the best cure is calm seas and staying within visual distance of a shore!

Nothing ever worked for me except the patch. It was a miracle cure since i was so prone to seasickness. i have always heard that "it's mental" angle and i don't think it is. some people just tolerate motion and others don't, although i do think there's a mental component to it as others get sick around you.

i would always know it was coming on when i would start to yawn repeatedly. when that happened, i would start thinking about heading for the rail. one thing that always cleared it up for me was turning for home. once i got the following sea, it would clear up pretty fast.

The Gulf of Mexico can be brutal at times. I have a large boat, but 4-6 wave heighths are just not fun. I was 75 miles offshore, once, and a cold front blew through creating 9' swells. It took me 8 hours to get to the marina. Talk about needing Scopolamine. :)

Doc, my PCP prescribed me Meclizine, so no patch. Hope it does the trick.

I was once surfing off Baja after a large BBQ (mexican lobsters over a campfire = yummy).

But a great night was ruined when mescal bottle was passed around. Way, way too much.

There was a storm. The seas were extreme.

And, you guessed it, I got seasick sitting on my surfboard.

How ridiculous is that?

I puked right there in the water.

Paddled away.

Felt much better.

Only happened to me once.

Once was enough.
