Mayfield to get extra year????/

BigXII is considering a rule change today that would give Baker Mayfield of OU an extra year of eligibility.

If this new rule is in reference to the way Tech took the year of eligibility from a player not on scholarship in order to transfer within conference I am in total agreement.

whatever happens, i think that first vote was greatly impacted by very deep disgust for one particular oklahoma official whose mouth outruns the rest of him.

I personally agree with the new language in the rule if it passes.

I think that a walk-on should be able to transfer without penalty IF they were not offered a scholarship after the walk-on season.

If they played as a walk-on, were offered a scholarship, then still decided to transfer in conference (as I think was the situation with Mayfield at Tech), then the rule and penalty should still apply, even if they didn't accept the scholarship offer.

Apparently, the new rule says that the university without enough foresight to originally offer the walk-on who wants to transfer in conference shall have the right of first refusal by offering said walk-on a scholarship. Sounds a lot like implied ownership of a free agents' football rights to me.

It was my understanding that after the season (and before the bowl game) Mayfield approached Kingsbury and wanted his scholarship (and he wanted Kingsbury to verify that he, Mayfield was the starter). I understand that no scholarship was offered and, needless to say, he would not name Mayfield the starter. So Mayfield walked. Since Mayfield chose Oklahoma, per conference rules, he was stripped of the eligibility the following year.

I am not 100% happy with the new rule but I am pleased for Mayfield. It just ain't right that an institution of higher learning could do such an injustice to an amateur, student-athlete.

I have to agree. 

While it's currently bad for Texas. Just because you walked on and played for a program doesn't mean they own you and your opportunities. I don't even agree with the transfer rules TBH. "Student Athletes" should be allowed 1 free transfer in their career. 

But I doubt Mayfield stays until 2017. Yes he is small but if he has another good year, he will go pro to get a late 1st round draft pick (like Manziel and Tebow). Guaranteed $8 million? Yes please.
