Lots of Buzz about VaTech & the SEC

......and it isn't just coming from crazies but also from a couple of sources I trust (& some I don't). If the SEC were to poach VT, we grabbed FSU & Clemson and maybe the Big 10 takes MD and UVA, it is hard to imagine that the ACC would sue 3 major conferences.

I have been reading it as well. I hate Va. Tech and always have and could give a rats ass about them going SEC. If the FSU/Clemson to Big 12 deal is still viable I could see the deals going down. All the Big East teams that are worth saving (very few) could slide into the ACC and the Big East would remain as irrelevant as it is today.

Many folks think the ACC gets devoured like this:

Big 10 - UVA & Maryland (also takes UConn & Rutgers)

SEC - VaTech & North Carolina (sounds weird but the SEC is obsessed with getting them I was told)

Big12 - FSU, Clemson, Miami, Ga Tech, NC State (and Louisville)

That gets us 3/4 of the way there to having 4 power conferences with 16 teams each. All that is left is for the Pac to take 4 teams. I could see FOOTBALL ONLY additions for: Boise St, BYU, SDSU & UNLV.

If Penn State gets bounced from the Big 10, I could see them grabbing Duke or Boston College.

I know I am old and have outdated thinking but all these conferences becoming 16 or so teams is just not good for an individual teams chances of winning a title. I know it's coming but I can't get excited about it. Hell I still miss the SWC and hated it when we joined a conference with Oklahoma. Sucks:mad:

We need BIG PICTURE THINKERS with all these realignment moves. Teams that need to be making big jumps are only thinking about tomorrow and trying to take the next "step" to get where they need to be. We know where this thing is headed. Why piddle paddle?

I don't see UNC separating from Duke. But NC State will go to the SEC.
I tend to agree with you on the UNC/Duke split. It just doesn't happen. They are inthe same breath with TX/OU, Michigan/Ohio State and even Yankees/Red Sox as some of the nations biggest rivalries.

UNC could always join as a football only school while keeping their basketball conference alignment with Duke. Then again, the SEC might be willing to take Duke because of the basketball program and add another marquee rivalry to the SEC.

The SEC is hell bent on VT, but they apparently crave the basketball power of North Carolina to go with Kentucky.

If you are the SEC....honestly... what do you want more to get UNC Hoops. Another football program when youve got a ton of them, or one of the top 5 programs in hoops history at Duke?

I dont think the SEC would "lower" itself to having football only members..
