With his tie for third place finish in the 2012 British Open, Tiger Woods has moved to second in the world golf rankings. He is a few hundredths of a point ahead of Rory McElroy and a full point behind Luke Donald.

Sunday's results allowed Woods to build on his world-leading 269.57 points earned overall, which is more than 50 points higher than any other golfer has earned in the reporting period.

You would never know this if you listened to Sunday's coverage of the Open. The announcers, especially Paul Azinger, constantly criticized Tiger's on course strategy and playing ability. He played badly but had the lowest score of any competitors in the final two groups.

I heard he had climbed the rankings. But look at his majors in the last 4 years. He is right up there with the rest of anonymity. Tiger needs 4 more majors to tie Nicklaus and he is 36 years old. Does he beat Jack in his time on the tour? I am not so sure now. How many guys currently on the PGA tour now have won 4 majors? I don't think too many. Els just won his 4th major and TOm Watson has 8 majors. My point is the odds are not in Tigers' favor even with his relatively young age. He has really taken a step back over the last handful of years.

Would you be surprised to find that Tiger is on a better pace than Jack at the same age? If Tiger doesn't win for 7 more majors they will be completely tied. He might have won Sunday if not for that one very unlucky shot. He was a yard from that ball going up near the hole, instead he had a triple..

Yeah, he choked it up but not as bad as Scott did. Felt bad for the guy - he should have won. Tiger has his work cut out of he plans to tie or surpass the Golden Bear. He has time to do it but I don't think the odds are on his side (judging by his play over the last few years). Plus he needs to stay healthy.

The triple was bad luck and he did finish tied for third..Plus he has won (3) tournaments this year..He has already won more tournaments than Jack but is held to the most ridiculous standard I have ever seen.

Tiger is in his 30's and Jack won his last major at age 46. He has 10 years left and people act like he is done?

I know he is winning tourneys but the majors are the gold standard when it comes to how PGA Tour golfers are regarded. Tiger was considered to be the best once and arguably he is. TO solidify that he will have to break Jack's major record or settle in for a place in the top 3.
