Some of the nicest people I've ever met have been Longhorns. The generosity and giving spirit of Longhorns everywhere is often touching and in some cases, overwhelming. I've seen it no many times.
My son will take an official visit to McMurry University Friday-Saturday. We had an unofficial visit there two months ago and were given a tour of all the facilities and such. One thing that caught my eye was in the main athletic facility, there is a dining/reception/conference room that is rather large and very nice and plush, what you would expect for special visitors.
While being given the tour, the guide explained how McMurry is so reliant on private donations to get things done as far as new buildings, facilities. So they recognize those who donate by placing plaques in front of the parts that were built in large part due to those donations.
So there is a plaque that sits on the wall there outside the fancy dining/reception room. It contains a list of about 15 Texas Longhorns who got together and donated a large sum of money which made possible the building of this special reception room. While my memory stops short of the names on that list, I do remember at least one or two were ex-players and were well known.
The thing is, it touches me that these gentlemen came together after seeing a need, worthy mission and a track record of success and responded in a big way despite not having the connection they have with UT. Despite it being such a small school in a small West Texas town. They could have done other things with that money, or nothing at all. But instead they chose to help out a little friend.
When we go again this weekend, I'll make sure to snap a photo of that plaque so I can list their names.
