I am not an Alumni of UT. I have always been a fan. Red McCombs is not owed anything. I am proud that a UT alum has been as successful as he has. But to say what he said about Strong are the ramblings of someone who hasn't paid attention to the world outside of south central Texas.

Hey Red, The man WAS a Head Coach and a damn good one. Pay attention.

Red was way out of line. I don't care how rich you are, it doesn't give you the right to publicly disrespect someone who has just joined the program and doesn't deserve to be belittled as a professional. Red embarrassed the program today.

1st thing that came to mind when I read his, "He might be good enough to be a coordinator comment," and I will not be a lone ranger with that feeling.

I hate to say it because I've always like Red, but that is exactly how it came across on air. It made me physically upset. My stomach turned the same way it does when you discover somebody you know dies.

My friend, I completely understand and agree with your statement about using proper language in the approach of BMDs on this board. I'll not break your rules in this or any future matters. But you and everyone should know a few things in our history.

In 1967, Darrell Royal dared to suggest that Texas should start recruiting black players and was making plans to do just that. Remember, this was the 60's, in the midst of the civil rights movement. A few regents and BMDs were so very upset with Royal that following the '67 season, they were making plans to dump Royal. LBJ sent my father and 3 others to Austin to deliver a personal message to a few of these "old money men" from the by God President of the United States. The message was received but a lot of hurt and anger lasted and when LBJ died in '72. DKR's life at 40 acres started becoming miserable and one of those men, who has his name on a prominent building, began to lead the charge to show Royal who was REALLY in charge. Even when he resigned and became AD, they made sure it was in name only. The program fell into an abyss, the facilities and the program suffered and didn't change until those "old money men" died off (thankfully).

Now Red McCombs may have done a world of good for UT. But his "entitlement" attitude is exactly what sent this program off a cliff before. I for one don't want the BMDs making the decisions.

Mr. Patterson has a vision and just told the BMDs who didn't agree with him, "shove it!" Now if that's disrespectful, so be it. But I applaud it. I applaud Patterson's decision on Charlie Strong. And somewhere, Darrell K. Royal is applauding as well. And those "money men" old and new? Well, let's don't let history repeat itself and let the dead ones roast on whatever spit on whatever level of hell they're currently in.

I agree with this 100%. I also think Red embarrassed himself today, although I don't think he realizes it just yet.

If Red had an issue with the hire, he should have discussed it directly with Patterson. If we expect Coach Strong to deliver as a consummate professional, he deserves to be treated as a consummate professional. I hope Red apologizes as publicly as he demeaned Coach Strong.

He donated money to the University, he didn't buy it and he doesn't own it. Mack's weak ass enabled him and turned him into a spoiled brat. we don't owe him anything and his comments today seemed to have racial underpinnings. I have no respect for him. Money doesn't buy class, it doesn't buy respect of one's peers, it does too often lead to the development of pathological egos as it has for red. what he did today was disgraceful, what he said about Case was disgraceful. red is devoid of redeeming qualities as far as I can tell. I also know a great deal about his personal life and proclivities, I pray for his soul.

I was excited when I first found this website, now not so much. You delete threads you do not agree with. You protect BMDs although they say terrible things about the players and they pout publicly when they do not get their way/say. Why do you protect them? Why? Just because they donate a ton of money does not mean they can say whatever they want publicly. If they have an issue, then they can talk to Steve Patterson. If he does not listen, then they can take their money elsewhere or they can just donate and take the tax break and shut up.

The best thing for everyone, especially AD Patterson and Coach Strong, would be to prove Red wrong. Plain and simple. Sometimes taking the hard road proves to be difficult, but worth it in the end. He will realize the idiocy of his comments in the near future.

What Red did today was indefensible and I'm appalled you are trying to defend him. For all the complaints Texas fans have had with Mack always trying to control the message, that's exactly what you're now doing McPhaul. Frankly, it's disappointing. I guess you can delete this post too.

There is a difference between saying Red made some dumb ass comments and saying Red is a dumb ass. the mods are simply trying to keep the attacks on posters, players, coaches, or anyone else from running rampant like they do on OB. I agree 100% with this mentality.

Unfortunately, old guys say just about whatever they want. Most of the time people just excuse them saying " ...he is just an old fart, don't pay attention". Kind of like a free pass. However, in this case

Red just couldn't control his tongue. He is a very successful man who has given much of his wealth away and still has a ton. That doesn't give him a free pass and he has hurt himself with recent comments. It's hell getting old but it will and is happening to all of us at some point.

Wow! Thank you for posting this. I just gained respect for coach Royal.

In 1967 Coach Royal wanted to recruit a local Austin kid named Don Baylor, but it didn't happen. I'm sure hornrush could explain why not. Don got drafted by the Baltimore Orioles and had a 20 year career in Major League Baseball as a player and a coach. Coach Royal eventually recruited Julius Whittier. Julius played offensive guard on the freshman team in 1969 and lettered in 1970, 1971 and 1972. He was the first African American letterman at Texas and eventually earned three degrees from UT. Last I was aware, he was working as an attorney in Dallas. Personally, I would much rather hear from Julius than from Red about the hiring of Coach Strong. Red has given a lot to make UT what it is today. Julius Whittier has given more.

I must have missed it, seemed pretty tame to me.

While I agree about keeping the bar higher than we see at TOS, I'm not accustomed to filtering my language, sarcasm or insults. One of the things I like about this site is that it's pretty self-regulated as far as personal attacks, etc. go. I'd like to see it stay that way, and would hate to see a bunch of indiscriminate deleting. It makes it hard to maintain any consistency for the mods. In my experience anyway.

I understand that they need to delete a post that gets out of hand or even request that someone adjusts their thread title. However, when they delete an entire thread they do not agree with, maybe it implies they would rather protect the BMDs.

The entire thread really was that bad. Most BMDs could care less what we post on a forum. If there was ever a thread that needed to be deleted that was it.
