That's fair. Let me add this. What Jamail and Red have given to the University is absolutely astronomical.
Have any of you ever had a close one to you get up there in age and spout things off they would not have normally said? I know I have.

The only thing I'm trying to express to you all, is give the same to these two men the same leeway that you have given your loves ones.

If there are two men that have earned that, it's Red and Joe.
I agree that we should be more respectful in our disagreement and for that I am sorry as I did not show my disagreement in the right manner.

However this as become something of a norm lately for him. Between what he said about some of the kids playing on the team and now this, it is hard to harbor too much respect. Money does not buy or earn my respect. It is appreciated and it is great he is in position to do that.

With that I will say no more about the subject.

Wow, thought all the bickering would have ended by now! I for one am grateful to have Mr. Strong aboard & ready for Longhorn football.

If he brings in a great OC & can fill a few holes, mainly QB, he will be off to a great start! We all know the cupboard is lacking in a few areas and ANY new coach will need at least a couple of classes of his own to correct the roster. I think he can do it...

Red disrespected the university we all pour our blood, sweat and tears in to in a very public manner. For those of us that have gotten on board with the hire and are genuinely excited for the upcoming season, he may as well told us all we are stupid to our faces. That's why you're seeing the general disrespectful responses from the "little" fan perspective.

I, for one, amtired of millionaires/billionaires having a say in and screwing up my favorite teams:

Hicks - Rangers/Stars

Jones - Cowboys

McCombs - Longhorns

The track record of these guys proves beyond a reasonable doubt that they know nothing about building a championship team. Every last one of them thinks you buy championships.

I applaud Patterson for shutting McCombs (and any other BMDs with their panties in a wad) out of the decision making process. The teams aren't toys for the rich to play around with at their own leisure. These are parts of our (the true fans) lives that we turn to religiously a few hours a week to forget about our real world responsibilities for a little while.

One gets respect or not by what one does, not by who one is.

You need to ask my family about this spouting stuff.

Red went off the reservation and was disloyal to our school in these comments. He has done many great things in his life, has been immensely successful and has been a great alum from the 40 acres. That does not give him the right to make us look like a clown show in public, there are right and wrong ways to voice your displeasure. He owes Coach Strong and Steve Patterson an apology.

There is a respectful and disrespectful way to address a BMD if you disagree with his comments or stance.
Unfortunately some of us I have chosen the the disrespectful response to Reds comments.

Let's be above that here.

Thanks,

Darrell
Is this directed at me?

I disagree McPhaul. What Red said today borders on racism. Plus it's not like Red hasn't said some pretty horrible things in the last month.

My only issue with this is that it is being qualified by "BMD". Everyone is deserving of being treated with dignity and worth regardless of how much money one has or donates to UT.

I'll just say that I agree with much of what's been said here, both about being respectful and earning respect. I agree about cutting old folks a break, especially if on the whole they are wonderful, generous people; however, I don't want to feel like I can't come here and say, 'What a jerk,' when somebody has been a total jerk.

I'm incredibly tolerant of old folks who are set in their ways, but that doesn't mean I haven't snapped and said, 'Hold up, Granny! That's just rude!'

So, yeah. That's where I'm at with that.

ETA: I cancelled all of my Rivals and IT subscriptions today, I'm down to HS and 247. Please don't tighten the belt any more. I like it here.

This right here (which aligns with many other comments too).

Red made his "thought" known... He embarrassed the university and took cheep shots at Strong and Paterson on Strong's announcement of head coach and I have to stand down and like it????

So I will not do any cheap shots at Red... but I think everyone knows how I feel so I will leave it at that.

Racism? Not hardly.
1st thing that came to mind when I read his, "He might be good enough to be a coordinator comment," and I will not be a lone ranger with that feeling.

Red McCombs and his comments today are the epitome of what is wrong, or was wrong with the football program. Self entitlement is no longer welcomed with Coach strong or Patterson.

Amen!

And I am not advocating disrespecting Red or anyone else. But I sure don't respect someone just because of their checkbook either. I don't know Red McCombs, so I have little to say about the man. I think his comments were in ridiculously bad taste though.
Red was way out of line. I don't care how rich you are, it doesn't give you the right to publicly disrespect someone who has just joined the program and doesn't deserve to be belittled as a professional. Red embarrassed the program today.

I haven't read the whole thing, only the cliff's notes here, but passive racism is still racism. Whether he intended it or not, he could've been a lot more constructive with his criticism. I'll just hope he comes around quickly, makes amends, and then we can let him make it.
