Just some thoughts...

I would counter that Patterson made the hire b/c he knew our other targets weren't leaving their current situations and,

Strong is a culture-changer,

he can re-energize our recruiting efforts (countering an angle sumlin is using with kids),

etc.

I think it's a shrewd hire for a lot of reasons.

Now, the matter of bringing his entire staff gives me pause because he can offer super talented coaches a lot of money with UT's resources but I'm willing to wait and see what he does.

That staff still coached a team to two 11 win seasons and will have a brand name that will attract more highly rated prospects from which to build a team.

I think he can get it done here. I like that he has an underdog feel to his personality and think our players need a little humility to maximize their talent. If our guys went into each game with something to prove instead of feeling like "We're Texas" we might just shed our soft label and start getting back to being elite.

Very disappointing hire and looking at our history to think he is going to bring an all star staff with him is laughable. First, we were going to bring in a big time AD, nope didn't happen. Next we were going for a big time hc, nope didn't happen. Now we supposedly are going to get great assistant coaches, nope not going to happen. We are a legend in our own minds and proof says we are not the biggest kid on the block except for money and evidently we can't use it to maximum effectiveness

It is even worse than this. Much worse. We will be split more than we were during the Akers years. Patterson will not last long at Texas.

Shaun I respect you man but that's BS. I think Texas fans need to come off their high horse. Is it quite possible that Saban and others simply didn't want the Texas job? Sure their was interest and flirtation, but let's be honest. Those coaches already had it pretty good where they were at. The only reason to leave was money and money isn't everything. With respect to Nuu's post, you left out the part where he talked about Strong being the best available option that WANTED to come to UT. If the BMD wants to pull his money then let him. His allegiance is to the University and not a coach. You get behind your coach no matter what. Hell he hasn't even assembled a staff yet and people are complaining.

Texas wanted a culture change and they got it. An AD who's not being a puppet to the BMD's and a hard nosed defense coach with more Natty's then the previous coach. Some were looking for a flashy hire when we simply need a football coach. Flashy doesn't get you in the playoffs.

It's time for Texas fans to realize while we have more money than everybody, this isn't the top job anymore. Reality is hard to deal with sometimes.

Very well said! Funny how we went from a potentially bright future yesterday to stormy skies today. To me this is a what the hell were you thinking hire! Gonna be a loooong 3 or 4 years ahead of us IMO.

My guess is 90% of the fan base (maybe more) doesn't even know what is going on today and 100,000+ will fill DKR later this year cheering as they always do.
Personally I will be waiting to see how this all turns out before judging.
You are absolutely right and the other several million UT fans just sit by and watch the underachievement cycle perpetuate itself. The UT nation does not demand championship excellence. UT games have become more of a cocktail party/social event than part of a serious athletic championship pursuit over the last 40 years. Championships have become statistical anomalies rather than the product of a well designed professional process. UT leadership has been poor for the last two generations and this hire was a chance to change all of that completely. What we got is another Mickey Mouse search that chose a third tier coach with zero head coach experience in a major conference and a botched roll out of the announcement.

Yeah, UT nation will just look the other way and show up because they do not demand championships.

Big decisions instill doubt. Doubt breeds skepticism. Skepticism leads to fear.

I commend Patterson for taking control where HE FELT he needed to take control. The last thing we need is another floppy wrist who can't make a tough decision on his own. As much as he wants this to be his hire, he prbly equally does NOT want this to be a BMD-forced hire, because, unless I'm mistaken, their jobs don't depend on this decision.

Patterson remaining objective now, and throughout his tenure, is exactly what we need. This too shall pass and I truly believe in Strong.

TEXASTRONG and Hook 'em!

I'm not sure how I feel about the BMD getting beyond livid and seriously considering pulling his donation. Sounds tantrum-esque, and I'm not trying to be mean spirited about it. If Patterson was hired to do a job, and they all thought he was the guy for that based on his resume and their conversation with him, then don't you trust that he has put the effort into finding the guy that he thinks will give UT the best chance of success? Or were they just looking for a guy who would do what they wanted? Patterson's decision in the OP is being framed as one of fear, but if he was willing to go against BMD because he thought it was the right choice for Texas than I think he's got cojones.

Oh he did tell us he would be open to bringing in the best of the best. But now the rumors are he is bringing his whole staff with him. Yikes
When a relationship starts with a lie it will be doomed to failure.

No shit. Why would any good coach want to come to Texas with the bullshit that comes due to the BMD's.

LOL. Love the doom and gloom before anything has even happened and a new HC has coached their first game.

Interesting that you paint Patterson as the bad guy. I think the BMDs are the ones who made this look like a clown show and need to be knocked down a notch. They can pull their donations if they want, but that should be the extent of their power. Not hiring football coaches. It should be Patterson's decision to own. I'm disappointed with Strong (just felt we needed a bigger splash) but at the end of the day it's about winning games.

But I think part of our culture change needs to be getting some of the BMDs the hell out of Bellmont and back into their stadium suites.

Reacting on emotions is never a recommended way of life. If it's done, it's done. We need to accept it and support all of them.

Well said, couldn't agree more.

You should tell your BMDs to remove themselves from our Athletic dept and we might have a chance at a big name. Until then we wont.

Thanks Shaunters. I think Strong bringing his whole first HC staff would be ridiculous. Shows the downside of his loyalty and emotion. Not ready for this big of job if so. If Patterson wants to be the man, he needs to hold the line on this and if CS falls, he falls, and Patterson can pick up with the big 4 remaining. He will have BMD support there.

If Patterson doesn't do this right, when Powers retires in a year, the BMDs will and should bring in a president who can clean out Patterson. If any falter of Football, Patterson would and should be the fall guy for handling it this way. His only option now is to make sure CS brings in the best offensive staff possible or walk. This is big time stuff year for these guys as leaders. Interesting to see how their egos and intelligence play out.

The thing about BMDs, they are just fans with means. Just because they have a ton of money, it does not make them experts on head coaches.

Strong was not my top choice, but the doom and gloom at this point is funny. What is worse is because so many are against him as HC right now next year is going to be miserable. Mack left the cupboard pretty bare in key positions so the chances of winning the conference is pretty low. You know people will be blaming Strong and by extension Patterson for that.

Changing coaches is not always an immediate impact that some think it should be.

This.

Fans and BMDs acting like children about this hire. I'm sure some would rather have Mack Brown back than Charlie Strong. Unbelievable.
