Is Texas fickel? Or is there just no common ground?

Why put out for Saban but cut Morris off? If the BMDs were willing to do what ever it takes to get Saban (he who's ability to win is unquestioned), why, when we have a noted great defensive mind for our coach, are they not willing to do what we know it takes to supplement the defense with the most notable offensive coordinator out there? I hear the justification that it is just too much money for the buyout, too little return for short time he would be here, etc. Has anyone talked to him about these concerns? If he is really interested in coming here then there ought to be some terms under which it could all happen.

He wants to come home, succeed in a situation where he gets all the credit, be well paid, be well incentivised for each level of success, and then land a top tier HC position..

Texas wants success and a long enough commitment to justify the up front expense. Texas needs to decide what they are willing to pay to get the success they wantand how many years are required to get the ROI they expect.Once that is known the deal can start being worked out. The question is not money, it's how long Morris is willing to guarantee Texas before he starts entertaining HC offers vs. how long Texas requires exclusive rights. The guarantee could be in the form of an outrageous buyout no matter what for that number of years, with the exclusive rights so secured by that buyout being given up after that number of years to any position he secures paying more in the NFL or a college head coaching position.

The terms can always be worked out. The question is what each side has to have and what are they willing to give up to get it. Is there any common ground?

lol careful i got scalded for posting similar...but its all about the buyout and morris potentialy walking in a year or two..i would love morris to but at the cost i can see why it wont happen...

I can't speak on Morris because I don't know enough about him but I do believe we have to change our entire coaching model. Strong was the first step. What I would like to see is hungry assistants/coordinators that want to advance and an atmosphere in which they are allowed to advance or leave to seek their dreams. I would like to see a HC that is secure enough in himself to allow up and comers to thrive. When they decide to leave I hope Texas pats them on the back and wishes them luck. Then, I want an AD that already has a contingency plan for the open position(s). Rinse and repeat.

So you're saying Morris is unwilling to negotiate a guarantee of 3 or 4 years (what ever Texas has to have to justify the ROI) ? Then the fault is with Morris and should be stated as such. Now if Texas requires more years, then that is probably on us.

After what went down with Mack/Saban there may not be enough support on the BOR to do a buyout like that.

I also wants to win now. McPhaul and I can get the monies together tonight If Morris will sign by 12:15AM this morning. After that no go.

We can also have a buyout for Morris. Leave after 1 year $5 mill, after 2 years $3 mill, and after 3 year $0.

Not worth it to pay that much for his buyout unless you had a guarantee in his contract that he would be here long enough to justify it. If you could ensure he would be here at a minimum of 2-3 years then I say go ahead and pay the buyout.

If not I would be just as happy with getting Tom Herman from OSU without the buyout knowing he would likely be in place as the OC longer providing stability.

The buy out money isn't the issue IMO. I don't buy a BMD wouldn't pay it. Texas paying that buy out plus over 1 mil salary with him walking after one year could be. That would be a total waste. Guessing they couldn't work out a guarantee situation on him staying for multiple years.

He's already getting run for the Vanderbilt head job

Guarantees are not enforceable. An employer cannot force someone to work. See Amendment, 13th.

You guys remind me of my kids. Everybody is all too glad to spend somebody else's money. If I'm a BMD, I am not wasting 5 mil on a buyout when the guy won't be here but a short time and they didn't get to be BMD's by being that stupid.

There are other options available.
