FINAL SCORE: Texas 27 – Longhorns 16

First half: Texas 24 – Longhorns 10

Observations:

  • 1st drive: Tyrone Swoopes made good run/pass decisions, and with the exception of an out that took too long to get to the wide side of the field, the passes were good. His athleticism was on display on the TD run that capped the drive. On defense the linebackers went upfield too quickly and were turning and chasing on most of the drive.

  • 2nd drive: The offense runs more smoothly when Heard doesn’t hesitate with the handoff decision. Heard’s throws are coming out on time, which is an improvement over practice. On defense, the second team DB’s are over-matched, but the DL looked capable against the second team OL. There was nobody in the middle of the field when Heard broke the pocket on his TD run.

  • On Cottrell’s sack of Swoopes, the entire DL collapsed the pocket and met at the QB. That looked like OL play from 2014.

  • Blake Whiteley playing with the first team and Andrew Beck fumbling early were both a surprise.

  • John Bonney had solid coverage on Daje Johnson’s first reception, but Heard put the ball where it could only be caught by Johnson. Johnson missed a block to seal the edge a few plays later and Bonney made a nice hit.

  • After Heard has a nice run, his tendency is to keep it on the next play rather than look downfield and distribute the ball. The “I’ll do it myself” trap is still a major temptation.

  • A solid punt and a made 42-yard field goal were the biggest positives of the 1st quarter.

  • Daje Johnson fumbling a punt reception is exactly what he doesn’t need to do with so many other options at punt returner. Jacorey Warrick was the returner on the next punt.

  • Alex De La Torre had a nice block to seal the edge on D’Onta Foreman’s 2nd quarter, 28-yard run. Taylor Doyle wasn’t called for holding on the next play (should have been flagged), but he’s having trouble in pass protection.

  • The design of the offense seems determined to stretch the defense horizontally. Most throws and runs are moving toward the sideline, which leaves the middle of the field wide open.

  • When the referees started calling penalties in the 2nd quarter, the offense’s rhythm was thrown off. That needs to change.

  • Nick Rose’s second field goal (made from 52 yards) was good from at least 60. He crushed it.

  • Malik Jefferson has been all over the field in the first half. He’ll show up when the coaches watch film from this game. On his forced fumble, he also had a nice punch at the ball in addition to the hit – great technique from the youngster.

  • Andrew Beck is struggling to block any of the first team DL players. He does a good job of staying in front of them and slowing them down, but is overpowered quickly by a bull rush.

  • The offenses, quarterback decision making, passing accuracy…everything bogged down as the first half progressed.
Second half: Longhorns 6 – Texas 3

Observations:

  • Naashon Hughes did a nice job of staying home on Warrick’s reverse. He also did a nice job of breaking down in the open field and giving Warrick nothing but the sideline.

  • Warrick’s propensity for a fair catch on punt return is reminiscent of Shipley in 2014.

  • With the exception of his bounced kick off the upright, Nick Rose was very good.

  • Camrhon Hughes struggled to stay in front of Shiro Davis.

  • Adrian Colbert is quietly racking up tackles. He’s been better against the run and after the catch then he has been when the ball is in the air.

  • The effort in the 2nd half has been poor enough that I’m a bit surprised Charlie Strong didn’t make them start over.

  • Swoopes, Heard, and Vinklarek have all had trouble holding on to shotgun snaps, presumably because they’re looking downfield instead of securing the ball.

  • Heard’s accuracy in the 2nd half still says he has work to do. Even when he has time to throw, he misses slightly – not like he did a month ago, though.

  • The drive charts in the 2nd half are not pretty.

  • Vinklarek, Holtz, and Greenwood threw check-downs. One of them needs to be capable of more than that or Kai Locksley’s redshirt is in danger.

  • Thanks goodness for a running clock in the second half.
Two takeaways

1. Especially given the depleted depth on defense, the offense was underwhelming. There were bright spots but the tempo was knocked out of rhythm too easily, and once it was off-beat, both quarterbacks struggled to resurrect it. Admittedly, the heavy rotation of players hurts rhythm.

2. A lot has been made of the leadership the team lost off the 2014 squad. This group needs leaders quickly because there is a lot of work to do this Summer. For those workouts to be effective, the team needs several strong-willed players to take control.

Notable Stat’s

  • The offenses combined for 49 pass attempts versus 39 rushes in the first half.

  • Heard and Swoopes combined for -35 yards rushing in the first half. The quick whistle contributed to that total.

  • 9 total points in the second half.

  • Swoopes rushed six times – Heard had 12…that’s consistent with how they practiced.

  • Ty Templin, Gaston Davis, and Dillon Boldt all show up prominently on the stat sheet. That tells you everything you need to know about the team’s depth.

I was actually pleased with both Swoopes and Heard. Both Foremans had their moments. Catalon and J. Gray both looked quick. The defensive line looked good overall. Malk J. and Freeman both looked like future stars. Bryson Echols, John Bonney and Jordan Strickland stood out in the secondary.

Did my cheap seats write up before I read this but one comment. . .

There were NO PUNT returns today by design nor were there kickoffs. . . .and yet Daje still managed to fumble one.

I think part of that was lack of gameplanning. . . .rather a series of seemingly random play calls and there is nothing wrong with our front 7. . .that is a salty group.

Agree that it was intentional. The incoming class needs to be ready to play....ST = depth. Right now, this team has no depth and therefore no ST.

5-6 of the non-redshirts need to make ST their mission.

D'Onta Foreman looked capable. It would have been nice if Catalon had been practicing all Spring.

Duke may find it difficult to work back into the regular rotation.

The most disappointing thing that I have read, from several reports, is that the OLine was not impressive... All seem to be in agreement that they are better than in 2014(which isnt tough to beat) but none had anything really positive to say. That area is going to make or break us.

I wasn't watching the o-line.  I was watching the qb's, linebackers, the receivers, and the defensive backs.

1. I wholeheartedly agree that this team's ceiling is dependent on the play of the OL.

2. While today the OL definitely looked like a work in progress, it's also true that there has been absolutely zero continuity along the line. Not only are different combinations of guys being played, but inside those combinations guys are changing positions along the OL. Continuity is critical to OL play, so when Wickline settles on the top 7-8 guys AND puts them in consistent positions, the line should improve.

3. Coleman Feeley is doing a specific review of today's OL play that will be of interest to you.

Coleman's specific review shouldn't take more than 5 words; They are not very good.

This.

My game balls go to Edwin Freeman, John Bonney and Bryson Echols. Three guys at three positions we needed to see some real promise from – and delivered that today.

Heard just needs more snaps.

We're in trouble at TE.

Pleased with Catalon, Gray.

Worried about our WRs.

Latest recruiting class better show up ready to play.

TE position is incredibly important...the key IMO...to a successful offense. Remember the Cowboys' teams

of 1992 and 1993...Super Bowl winning teams.  They had Aikman, E. Smith and M. Irvin...superior players.

But they also had Jay Novacek...to keep winning drives going when Irvin was covered.  The TE position...

seems like people take it for granted...great play from that position can make a good team a "great" team.

Yes, Texas needs better play from that position. Both receiving and blocking on running plays. Texas hasn't

had a difference maker at that position since Jermichael Finley around 2007.

Blaine Irby was a great TE...suffered that bad injury against Rice. Texas hasn't had a great TE since Irby,

I should say.

1-It's difficult to really make significant judgements when so many players were out with injuries (a bunch of key players). Even players like Gray were used cautiously.

2-The best players on the field were Jefferson, Echols, De La Torre, and Cottrell. Texas would be wise to use more of De La Torre, kid is a hell of a blocker.

3-I actually thought a lot of the young guys would get time in the secondary, which still may be the case. But I'm actually starting to like what we have in the secondary. Echols, Thomas, Roberts, Bonney, Haines and Hall in the seconardy isn't bad at all. Echols impressed me in the spring game. We have more talent in the secondary than I thought.

4-It was rumored that Texas would take a look at the Ohio State offense. This was definitely true. We had a lot of pre snap movement from TEs/FBs/WRs similar to what Ohio State did in the national championship game.

5-Most improved player on the roster IMO is Swoopes. Swoopes isn't going to be a Heisman winner or anything, but I actually expect him to be decent next year. I like Heard's legs but right now Swoopes is way ahead in the passing game/decision making.

6-WRs dropped too many passes (granted our best WR wasn't playing). I expect some of the Freshman to get time at WR. I like Joe and Foreman at WR, but I'm not overly impressed with anyone else.

7-Field goal kicking looks drastically improved.

8-It won't surprise me a bit if D'Onta Foreman becomes the back getting the majority of touches at the end of the season.

9-Offensive line wasn't great but certainly improved. Minimized the false start penalties and guys at least in the right position the majority of the time. I think the spread will help minimize the talent deficiencies we have on the offensive line.

10-I expect Swoopes to be the starter at ND but Heard to be used in certain packages. I think people tend to forget that Heard is only a RS Freshman (we saw that with his play in the spring game).

11-Daje doesn't need to return punts. I would put Warrick back there. I see why Daje has been running with the second team WRs. Like I've said, I don't think Daje is a WR. He's an undersized RB. I don't think Daje will see many snaps regardless because he's turnover prone, something Strong won't tolerate. I wouldn't mind seeing Daje on kickoff returns but not on punt returns.

12- I though Edwin Freeman looked good.

13-I still don't think there's enough talent on the roster quite yet to challenge for a Big 12 title. Strong made significant strides with the last recruiting class in terms of talent. I expect a 7-5 finish this year and that would be progress. Stockpiling talent should be the biggest priority right now. Strong has pretty much said he's not big on this roster yet, and I really don't disagree. Talent deficiencies in certain areas that take time to fix in recruiting.

Thanks Utis for the great report. Don't "like" this reply, that's not what I'm hunting for.

I just am a member here for "what's going on" as to Longhorn Sports. You stated what I wanted

to hear: an honest assessment as to UT Football...Spring Game, what can be expected next season,

etc. That's why I'm a member here, to understand and see what's going on with Longhorn Sports.

You do a wonderful job of reportage; please continue. Your posts and work are appreciated.

You do great work, continue, sir.

Disagree with #8 (injury notwithstanding)...J Gray is being underrated. I expect a big year from him. Foreman looked good however.

I couldn't help but think how much some improved WR play would have helped our QBs today. We really need some ballers at the position.

Depends on the offensive line. If the offensive line isn't creating great holes not sure Gray is the best back. Foreman is a wrecking ball that can create extra yards after contact. I expect Gray to see significant snaps though.
