I was afraid of this....

Somebody at the University...Pateerson or someone, needs to call Red out and remind him that he is only hurting the school with his negativity.

He didn't declare Strong as incompetent at all, he said he'd make a GREAT position coach or coordinator. How is that incompetent?
Seems some folks just want to chunk stones at anyone who questions the hire.
And how do you think Sumlin, Stoops, Briles, Gundy or any other coach using negative recruiting against UT will paint McCombs' comments? "Son, you have seen the respect Charlie Strong got from the highest levels of the program. If they don't show the respect that is due a man like Charlie Strong, what do you think is in store for you?" Red, SHUT.THE.F.UP!

Red needs to spend a little time watching Coach Strong's interviews/press conference...he might learn a little bit about class.

You're joking right? The guy has been a head coach for several years...at a BCS program. He's won a freakin BCS bowl as a head coach and national titles as DC. He's getting ready to have one of his players as prob the #1 pick in the NFL draft

He's earned his spot in his career - to suggest he isnt qualified to be a head coach (when he was one currently) and basically better suited to just be on a staff as a position coach or coord is taking a shot at the guy and not a compliment at all

If he doesnt like the hire then fine, but its stupid to suggest he's not qualified to be a head coach when he's turned around a program, won conf titles as a head coach, and won a BCS bowl for crying out loud at that program

Red is still making comments today - its ridiculous

I dont care how much money he gives...his comments are HURTING the program right now. You dont think Stoops and other in the big 12 will use this in recruiting big time?

"Why go to Texas - their biggest boosters dont even thing their coach is worth a crap"

Because he said basically said he isn't qualified to be a HC at Texas. That his qualifications are only enough to garner position coach status at Texas. How else would you take it.

Red isn't questioning the hire...he's slamming it. He got his tender little feelings hurt because "his guy" wasn't hired and has decided to belittle and attack Coach Strong in the media instead of taking his concerns to Patterson and Powers privately. According to his interview with ESPN San Antonio, he spoke with Strong sometime Sunday...you think that he was man enough to make the same comments then?

I think you missed the most important word in his post..."basically"

The implication is that Strong is NOT qualified as a head coach.

Perhaps Belmont should release a statement:

"The views and opinions expressed by Red McCombs are solely his own and in no way represent the views of the University of Texas. Our students, faculty and administration greatly appreciate his donations, but have recently considered that it may not be worth the embarassment. We all just wish he would stop spewing his inane bullsh*t to anyone who will listen and go back to swimming in his money vault Scrooge McDuck style."

hookem123,

There's just no real value in "throwing stones" at this juncture. Strong has been hired and we move forward. He wasn't in my top five choices, but I'll get behind the program and support him. When you state something deemed negative, you will not be well received by a lot on this board. I think Red is entitled to his opinion and it's shared by some. But a person of his stature can do so much more with a little honey and not so much vinegar. FWIW

He became a billionaire doing it his way and has no reason to change now. He's like Jerry Jones in that you have to get that interview because you know you will get something out of it.

It's scorched earth time now that his access and power are being reduced.

The really bad thing about this is that, to recruits, perception is reality. There is NO way McCombs' comments can be spun that won't hurt Coach Strong's recruiting efforts. Speaking of spinning, the idea that McCombs wasn't taking a shot at Strong's abilities by saying he'd be a good position coach is just wrong. McCombs was damning Strong with faint praise. McCombs' comments are those of a bitter, angry man who's used to getting his way, and didn't this time. Talk about how much good he's done with his donations to UT all you want, but in my eyes at least, he's washed that all away with the petulant comments he continues to make. He's butthurt because Patterson didn't hire Saban, and he's not likely to shut up or offer any apologies because to him, it's all about him...NOT the good of UT. I hope people can see through those comments, but I'm not optimistic that they will.

And all you can really do is stand out of his way. Frustrating or not, a University needs donors. Eventually he'll be back, if only to continue to derive "value" from the $100M he already donated. If Texas wins big next year, he'll go on ESPN and say he was supportive from the start - and we'll let him - as long as he keeps writing checks.

That's the problem with throwing money around - you need deep pocketed friends to reload your wallet from time to time and some of those friends may be idiots.

That interview and comments like the money at the Vatican are the kind made slamming scotch and cigars at a private club. Twenty years ago, he'd have been smart enough to know that. Don't believe you'll be seeing much of Red being schmoozed at the practice field any more.

Red has a point..It's been nearly three days since he was announced as the new head coach, and he hasn't flipped one recruit to Texas. Shit, Coach Gruden would have had a dozen or so flipped by now? Maybe two dozen by the time you read this?

OK, this ices it: between this and his "half-gimp" comments, it's abundantly clear that Red has far more money than sense. Red, the University of Texas Longhorns aren't a team that you can own like your other properties. Take a lesson from your new coach: none of this is about you. If you're giving only to gratify your own ego and pretend this team is one of your playthings along with the other oligarchs, you're setting the worst possible example for the young men and women who are the primary focus of the program.

I know I'm hopelessly naive to expect any of these entitled blowhards to demonstrate honor and integrity, but a man can dream. And I dream of the opportunity to tell Red, to his face, to just shut the F@#K up.

Let the old man vent. Screw 'em

Nothing will shut him up faster than winning football games

Again, there was a reason why he was NOT on the selection committee
